The Bollinger Bands Trending Reverse Strategy indicator is a trend-following mean reversion tool designed to identify potential reversal entries within an established trend using Bollinger Bands and an Exponential Moving Average (EMA).

Usage

This strategy is used to capture reversals back toward the mean when the market is in a clear trend. It provides two primary signals:

  • Long Entry: Occurs when the price touches the lower Bollinger Band while staying above the 200 EMA (indicating an uptrend). The signal is confirmed if the previous candle was bearish and the current candle is bullish.
  • Short Entry: Occurs when the price touches the upper Bollinger Band while staying below the 200 EMA (indicating a downtrend). The signal is confirmed if the previous candle was bullish and the current candle is bearish.

The strategy manages trades dynamically:

  • Take Profit: For long positions, the target is the upper Bollinger Band. For short positions, the target is the lower Bollinger Band. Since Bollinger Bands are dynamic, the take-profit price updates with every new bar.
  • Stop Loss: The stop loss is calculated upon entry based on the distance between the entry price and the take-profit target, divided by the user-defined Risk/Reward ratio.

Details

The script combines two volatility-based filters and a trend filter to ensure entries are taken in the direction of the primary trend. By using an EMA (defaulting to 200 periods), the strategy avoids counter-trend trading. The reversal logic (bearish candle followed by a bullish candle at the lower band, or vice versa) acts as a price action confirmation, ensuring that the momentum is starting to shift before an entry is executed.

Settings

  • Length: The period used for calculating the Bollinger Bands basis (SMA).
  • Source: The price data used for the calculations (e.g., Close).
  • StdDev: The standard deviation multiplier that determines the width of the Bollinger Bands.
  • EMA Input: The period for the trend-filtering Exponential Moving Average.
  • Risk/Reward Ratio: Defines the distance of the stop loss relative to the initial take-profit target.
  • Offset: Shifts the Bollinger Bands forward or backward on the chart.

FAQ

How do I access Bollinger Bands Trending Reverse Strategy?

You can get access on the LuxAlgo Library for charting platforms like TradingView, MetaTrader (MT4/MT5), and NinjaTrader for free.

Can I change the trend filter?

Yes, you can adjust the "EMA Input" in the settings to a lower value (like 50 or 100) if you prefer to trade based on shorter-term trends.

Why does my take profit line move?

The strategy uses the opposite Bollinger Band as a target. Because Bollinger Bands expand and contract based on market volatility, the exit target will adjust automatically as new price data arrives.
