The Extreme Trend Reversal Points indicator identifies potential market exhaustion and reversal zones by analyzing the alignment and strength of multi-level recursive moving averages. It distinguishes between ranging markets and extreme trends to filter out false signals commonly associated with standard moving average crossovers.

Usage

The Usage section focuses on identifying trend strength and potential exhaustion points. The indicator color-codes a central moving average to represent current market conditions:

  • Green/Lime: Indicates an extreme bullish or standard bullish trend where multiple MA levels are fully aligned.
  • Red/Orange: Indicates an extreme bearish or standard bearish trend.
  • Silver/Blue: Represents a ranging market where moving averages are intertwined.

Reversal signals are plotted as triangles when the price crosses the baseline moving average while the trend is in an "extreme" state (fully aligned). To manage these signals effectively, users can:

  1. Wait for the moving average color to turn neutral before entering.
  2. Use pivot levels or support/resistance zones to place stop-entry orders rather than market orders.
  3. Seek additional confirmation from candlestick patterns or momentum shifts.

Details

The script utilizes a Recursive Multi-Level Moving Average algorithm. This approach applies a moving average to a source, then applies another moving average to that result, repeating this process for a user-defined number of levels.

  • Trend Strength: Strength is calculated based on the relative position of every level against every other level. A maximum value represents a perfect bullish stack, while zero represents a perfect bearish stack.
  • Statistical Brackets: The tool uses historical percentile calculations to define "Range" and "Extreme Range" boundaries. This allows the indicator to adapt to changing volatility over a specified lookback period.
  • Visual Stack: On the last bar, the indicator displays the current stack of moving averages using lines, allowing users to see the dispersion between different recursive levels.

Settings

Moving Average

  • Source: The price source used for the initial moving average calculation.
  • Type: Options include SMA, EMA, RMA, and WMA.
  • Length: The lookback period for each level of the moving average.
  • Level: Determines how many recursive levels are calculated (minimum 5).

Thresholds & History

  • Range Percentile: Sets the inner boundary for the ranging zone relative to the median.
  • Extreme Range Percentile: Sets the outer boundary for extreme trend detection.
  • Percentile History: The number of bars used to calculate the historical distribution of trend strength.
  • Real Time Alerts: Toggles between alerts that fire immediately (may repaint) or on the close of the bar.

FAQ

How do I interpret the triangle signals?

Triangle signals indicate that price has crossed the moving average while the recursive MA stack was perfectly aligned. This often suggests a potential reversal or a deep pullback in an overextended trend.

What is the benefit of recursive levels over standard MAs?

Recursive levels create a much smoother representation of trend inertia. By measuring how many levels are aligned, the indicator can quantify the "perfection" of a trend more accurately than a single MA.
