RSI W Pattern strategy
Jun 2, 2020

The RSI W Pattern strategy indicator identifies high-probability long entries by detecting "W" shaped recovery patterns in the Relative Strength Index (RSI) during established uptrends. It aims to capture price dips within a trending market and exit quickly as momentum reaches overbought levels, making it suitable for short-term swing trading.
Usage
The strategy enters a long position when specific trend and momentum conditions align. A primary entry occurs when a short-term EMA (default 20) is above a long-term EMA (default 50), ensuring the trade is taken in the direction of the trend, and the RSI(5) forms a "W" pattern while crossing above the 30 level.
Additional features include:
- Pyramiding: The strategy allows adding to an existing position if the RSI crosses up from extreme oversold levels (below 10) or if another W pattern forms.
- Take Profit: Positions are automatically closed when the RSI crosses above 75, provided the trade is in profit.
- Stop Loss: A percentage-based stop loss is integrated to protect capital if the price drops below a defined threshold from the average entry price.
Details
The "W" pattern logic is defined by a sequence of RSI movements: a low, a bounce, a secondary low (often a higher low or double bottom), and a subsequent breakout. This specific implementation requires the RSI to be below a user-defined threshold (default 65) to ensure the entry isn't too late in the momentum cycle. By combining RSI structural analysis with EMA trend filtering, the script attempts to filter out "W" patterns that occur during bearish regimes, focusing instead on mean-reversion opportunities within bullish trends.
Settings
- RSI Period: Sets the lookback period for the RSI calculation (default is 5 for high sensitivity).
- Look for W pattern bottom edges well below RSI level (BUY): The maximum RSI level allowed for a valid entry signal.
- Long Term EMA: The period for the slower moving average used to define the primary trend.
- Short Term EMA: The period for the faster moving average used for trend confirmation.
- Stop Loss %: The percentage distance from the average entry price at which the strategy will exit the position to limit losses.
FAQ
How do I use the RSI W Pattern strategy?
To use this tool, add it to your chart and look for the "W" labels and green bar highlights. Ensure the EMAs are aligned (Fast > Slow) to validate the long signals generated by the RSI structure.
Can I adjust the sensitivity of the signals?
Yes, by changing the RSI Period to a higher number, you will get fewer, more significant signals. Lowering the RSI Period increases sensitivity for scalp-like opportunities.
