The Volume Weighted MACD (VWMA, 4 Color, Color-blind Friendly) indicator adapts the traditional Moving Average Convergence Divergence framework by utilizing Volume Weighted Moving Averages (VWMA) for its core calculations, providing a more volume-sensitive perspective on momentum and trend strength.

Usage

The indicator can be used similarly to the standard MACD to identify momentum shifts and trend reversals, but with the added benefit of volume weighting. Traders typically look for:

  • Crossovers: A bullish signal occurs when the MACD Line crosses above the Signal Line, while a bearish signal occurs when it crosses below.
  • Histogram Analysis: The four-color histogram helps identify the acceleration or deceleration of momentum. Bright green/red indicate strengthening trends, while darker shades indicate weakening momentum.
  • Zero-Line Crosses: When the MACD Line crosses above zero, it suggests the fast VWMA is above the slow VWMA, indicating a bullish trend.

Details

This implementation replaces the standard Exponential Moving Averages (EMA) used in the traditional MACD with Volume Weighted Moving Averages (VWMA) for the fast and slow components. By incorporating volume into the price average, the indicator gives more weight to price action occurring on higher volume, potentially filtering out "weak" price moves. The Signal Line remains an EMA of the MACD Line to maintain smoothness. Additionally, the color palette is specifically designed to be accessible for users with partial color-blindness.

Settings

  • Fast MACD Period: The lookback period for the fast Volume Weighted Moving Average.
  • Slow MACD Period: The lookback period for the slow Volume Weighted Moving Average.
  • Signal MACD Period: The EMA smoothing period applied to the MACD line to create the signal line.
  • Source: The price source used for all calculations (default is Close).

FAQ

How do I access the Volume Weighted MACD (VWMA, 4 Color, Color-blind Friendly)?

You can get access on the LuxAlgo Library for charting platforms like TradingView, MetaTrader (MT4/MT5), and NinjaTrader for free.

What is the difference between this and a normal MACD?

The standard MACD uses EMAs which only consider price. This version uses VWMAs, which weight price by the volume traded during each period, making the indicator more responsive to high-volume market activity.

Are the colors customizable?

Yes, while the default colors are chosen to be color-blind friendly, you can modify the colors for the MACD Line, Signal Line, and Histogram segments within the "Style" tab of the indicator settings.
