Smart Money Footprint & Cost Basis Engine
Aug 31, 2025

The Smart Money Footprint & Cost Basis Engine indicator identifies institutional activity by detecting high-volume displacement candles and calculating the volume-weighted cost basis of large market participants. This tool helps traders pinpoint high-probability reaction zones where institutional "memory" is likely to trigger significant price movements.
Usage
The indicator identifies potential institutional entries and marks them as zones on the chart. Traders can use these zones to anticipate reversals or trend continuations based on where "Smart Money" has historically positioned itself.
- Bullish Cost Basis Zones (Green): These represent areas where large players have likely accumulated positions. A price return to these zones often acts as support.
- Bearish Cost Basis Zones (Red): These identify areas of institutional distribution. A return to these zones typically acts as resistance.
- Zone Ratings: Zones are marked with a star rating (★☆☆ to ★★★). Higher ratings indicate stronger conviction based on volume intensity and historical confirmation.
- Signal Status:
- Active (Green/Red): The zone is fresh and waiting for a test.
- Tested (Gray): Price has entered the zone and triggered a valid signal.
- Invalidated (Dark Gray): The zone was broken decisively, suggesting the institutional interest at that level has shifted.
Details
The engine utilizes a multi-stage process to validate institutional footprints:
- Displacement Detection: Scans for Fair Value Gaps (FVGs) created by high-volume candles, signaling urgent institutional movement.
- Cost Basis Calculation: It calculates the Volume-Weighted Average Price (VWAP) specifically for the detected move to estimate the entry price of large players.
- Historical Confirmation: The script checks if similar institutional moves occurred in the same price vicinity in the past. If a historical match is found, the zone's significance is upgraded.
- Reaction Logic: Signals are generated when price enters a zone and meets user-defined confirmation filters, such as momentum alignment or candlestick patterns.
Settings
Trigger & Confirmation Settings
- Volume Multiplier: Defines how much higher the current volume must be relative to the average to be considered institutional displacement.
- Volume Period: The lookback period for the moving average volume.
Signal Accuracy Filters
- Momentum Confirmation (Stoch): When enabled, requires a Stochastic crossover to align with the trade direction before a signal is printed.
- Candlestick Confirmation (Engulfing): Requires a bullish or bearish engulfing candle within the zone for signal validation.
- Lower Timeframe MSS Confirmation: An advanced filter that waits for a Market Structure Shift (MSS) on a specified lower timeframe.
Historical Confirmation Settings
- Require Historical Confirmation: Toggles the "Memory" requirement. If off, every detected footprint is displayed.
- Historical Search Period (Bars): The number of bars the engine searches back for matching footprints.
- Tolerance Calculation Method: Determines how the zone width is calculated (ATR Multiplier or fixed Percentage).
FAQ
How do I interpret the star ratings?
The star ratings indicate the confidence level of a zone. Three stars (★★★) represent zones with extreme volume and historical confirmation, while one star indicates a standard institutional footprint.
Why do some zones turn gray?
A zone turns gray once it has been "Tested," meaning the price reached the zone and a confirmed buy or sell signal was generated based on your filter settings.
