The Institutional Support/Resistance Locator indicator identifies high-probability demand and supply zones by detecting confluence between price rejection, candle body size, and volume. This tool helps traders visualize areas where institutional participants may be defending or targeting specific price levels, providing a structured approach to identifying potential reversal or continuation points.

Usage

The Institutional Support/Resistance Locator can be used across various trading styles to pinpoint institutional footprints:

  • Trend Trading: Traders can look for demand zones during uptrends to identify potential bounce entries. Conversely, supply zones can be used to identify high-probability pullback short entries during downtrends.
  • Range Trading: In sideways markets, these zones serve as potential reversal points where price may bounce between established supply and demand levels.
  • Scalping & Intraday: Users can combine the appearance of these zones with real-time volume or price action for refined entries on lower timeframes.

The indicator plots translucent regions on the chart that represent these identified zones. Each zone persists for a customizable number of bars (Zone Extend Bars) before expiring, allowing traders to focus on the most recent and relevant institutional activity.

Details

The script identifies zones based on a multi-factor calculation:

  1. Candle Body Analysis: It compares the current candle body size to a Simple Moving Average (SMA) of recent candle bodies. A "Large Body" is confirmed if the size exceeds this average by a user-defined multiplier.
  2. Volume Confirmation: The script requires volume to be higher than its SMA by a specified multiplier, ensuring the zone is backed by significant market activity.
  3. Wick Rejection: The indicator checks for aggressive price rejection, where the wick size (lower for bullish, upper for bearish) is significantly larger than the candle body.

When these criteria align, the tool marks the high and low of the candle as a zone, optionally adding padding to the edges.

Settings

  • Body Lookback Period: The number of bars used to calculate the average candle body size.
  • Body Multiplier: Determines how much larger a candle body must be compared to the average to be considered significant.
  • Volume Lookback Period: The number of bars used to calculate the average volume.
  • Volume Multiplier: Determines how much higher the volume must be compared to the average.
  • Wick Multiplier: Sets the required ratio of wick length to candle body for rejection detection.
  • Zone Extend Bars: Controls how many bars into the future the zone remains visible on the chart.
  • Zone Padding (%): Adds a percentage-based buffer to the top and bottom of the identified zones.
