The Volatility Based Momentum (VBM) indicator is a momentum oscillator that normalizes price change using historical volatility to provide a universal measurement of asset strength. It aims to offer a more consistent perspective on momentum by expressing price shifts in "multiples of volatility" (MoV) rather than simple percentage gains or losses.

Usage

The Usage section describes how the script can be used. VBM is primarily used to identify the strength and direction of a trend relative to an asset's typical price fluctuations.

  • Trend Identification: When the VBM line is above zero, it indicates positive momentum; when below zero, it indicates negative momentum.
  • Momentum Strength: Higher absolute values suggest that the current price movement is significantly larger than the average volatility of the security. For example, a reading of 2.0 implies the price has moved two average true ranges over the specified lookback period.
  • Crossings: Traders often look for zero-line crossovers as potential signals for trend reversals or entry points. A cross above zero suggests a bullish shift, while a cross below suggests a bearish shift.

Details

The Volatility Based Momentum (VBM) tool operates similarly to a standard Rate of Change (ROC) indicator but replaces the percentage denominator with a volatility-based one. By dividing the price change over $n$ periods by the Average True Range (ATR) over $v$ periods, the indicator creates a normalized unit of measurement.

This normalization allows for better comparisons across different asset classes (e.g., comparing a volatile cryptocurrency to a stable Forex pair) and different timeframes. Because volatility is factored into the momentum calculation, the indicator automatically adjusts to changing market conditions, providing a clearer view of whether a move is "abnormal" or within standard expectations.

Settings

  • Periods used to calculate rate of change: Sets the lookback window ($n$) to determine the price difference between the current close and the close $n$ bars ago.
  • Periods for ATR used to normalize the rate of change: Sets the lookback window ($v$) for the Average True Range calculation used to normalize the momentum output.

FAQ

How do I interpret a VBM value of 1.0?

A VBM value of 1.0 means that the price change over your chosen lookback period is exactly equal to the average volatility (ATR) of the security.

How does VBM differ from the standard ROC indicator?

While ROC measures the percentage change in price, VBM measures the change relative to the asset's volatility. This makes VBM more effective for comparing assets with different price scales or risk profiles.
