The Anchored Moving Average By Market Mindset - Zero To Endless indicator provides dynamic, time-anchored SMA, WMA, and VWAP calculations to help traders identify trend direction and key support or resistance levels relative to specific starting time intervals.

Usage

The Usage section describes how the script can be used to analyze market trends. Unlike standard moving averages with fixed lookback periods, this tool resets its calculation at the start of a defined time period (e.g., daily, weekly, or monthly). This creates a cumulative moving average that tracks the "average price" since a significant timeframe open.

Traders can utilize the indicator in the following ways:

  • Trend Identification: When price remains above an anchored moving average, the trend for that specific period is considered bullish. Conversely, price below the average suggests a bearish sentiment.
  • Support and Resistance: Anchored VWAP and SMA lines often act as psychological levels where institutional participants may enter or exit positions.
  • Multi-Type Analysis: Users can compare the SMA (price-only), VWAP (volume-weighted), and WMA (weighted) to see how different calculation methods react to current volatility.

Details

The core concept of an anchored moving average (AMA) is the use of a dynamic denominator. Instead of looking back at a fixed number of bars, the script starts its calculation from a specific "anchor" point, increasing the lookback length with every subsequent bar until a new anchor point is triggered.

  • SMA (Simple Moving Average): Calculated using the close price. It is useful for markets where volume data is unavailable or irrelevant.
  • VWAP (Volume Weighted Average Price): Calculated using hlc3 and volume. This is the standard for many intraday traders as it reflects the true average price paid based on trading volume.
  • WMA (Weighted Moving Average): Calculated using hl2. This version places more significance on recent price action compared to the SMA, making it responsive to large price expansions.

The "Auto" anchor setting dynamically selects the reset period based on the chart timeframe:

  • Intraday (≤ 15m): Resets daily.
  • Intraday (> 15m): Resets weekly.
  • Daily: Resets monthly.
  • Higher Timeframes: Resets yearly.

Settings

  • Anchor Period: Defines when the moving average resets. Options include Auto, Daily, Weekly, Monthly, and Yearly.
  • Show Prev. Period MA: When enabled, a horizontal line is projected from the final value of the previous period's moving average, allowing for visual comparison between periods.
  • SMA Toggle/Color: Enables or disables the Anchored Simple Moving Average and allows for color customization.
  • VWAP Toggle/Color: Enables or disables the Anchored Volume Weighted Average Price and allows for color customization.
  • WMA Toggle/Color: Enables or disables the Anchored Weighted Moving Average and allows for color customization.

FAQ

Which anchored moving average should I use for intraday trading? The VWAP is generally preferred for intraday trading as it incorporates volume data, providing a more accurate reflection of the "fair value" for the day.

What does the "Auto" anchor period do? The Auto setting automatically selects an appropriate anchor period based on your current chart timeframe to ensure the moving averages remain relevant to your trading horizon.
