Momentum Linear Regression
Nov 8, 2016

The Momentum Linear Regression indicator analyzes price momentum by applying a linear regression calculation to the Rate of Change (ROC), providing a smoothed representation of trend velocity and potential reversals.
Usage
The indicator consists of a linear regression line applied to momentum and a secondary signal line created by shifting the main plot. Traders can use the crossovers between these two lines or the slope color changes to identify shifts in market trend.
When the momentum linear regression line turns green and crosses above its previous value, it suggests an uptick in bullish momentum. Conversely, when it turns red and crosses below its previous value, it suggests a shift toward bearish momentum. Increasing the lookback periods for the linear regression or momentum can help filter out market noise at the expense of increased lag.
Details
This tool is based on an original concept shared on ProRealCode by Nicolas. It calculates the difference between the current price and the price $n$ bars ago (Momentum/ROC) and then applies a linear regression trendline to that data. This process effectively smooths out the volatile nature of raw momentum indicators, making it easier to identify the underlying directional strength of a move. By using a shifted signal line, the indicator generates entry and exit signals based on momentum acceleration or deceleration.
Settings
- Momentum Length: The number of bars used to calculate the price change (Momentum).
- Linear Regression Period: The lookback window used to calculate the linear regression of the momentum values.
FAQ
How do I interpret the color changes?
The color changes reflect the slope of the linear regression. A green line indicates increasing momentum, while a red line indicates decreasing momentum.
Can I use this for trend following?
Yes, the indicator is designed to highlight the strength of a trend. Crosses above the zero line (implicit in the momentum calculation) or positive slopes generally indicate bullish trends.
