RSI Momentum Trend
Jun 23, 2023

The RSI Momentum Trend indicator identifies momentum shifts by combining Relative Strength Index (RSI) levels with Exponential Moving Average (EMA) price action direction. It helps traders pinpoint potential bullish and bearish trend starts by filtering RSI breakouts with momentum confirmation.
Usage
The tool is designed to highlight specific momentum windows where both RSI and price velocity align.
- Positive Trend: A bullish signal is generated when the RSI crosses above a specific upper threshold (default 65) while a short-term 5-period EMA is rising. This suggests strong upward momentum is building.
- Negative Trend: A bearish signal occurs when the RSI drops below a lower threshold (default 32) while the 5-period EMA is falling, indicating accelerating downward pressure.
Traders can use the "Positive" and "Negative" labels for entry confirmation or trend bias. The optional highlighter provides a visual background fill between short-term EMA bands to indicate the current active momentum state.
Details
The script evaluates momentum through two primary filters:
- RSI Position: The script checks if the RSI is above or below user-defined momentum thresholds. The positive condition requires the RSI to have crossed from below to above the positive threshold.
- EMA Slope: To filter out stagnant RSI movements, the indicator checks the
ta.changeof a 5-period EMA. A positive change confirms bullish momentum, while a negative change confirms bearish momentum.
The indicator maintains its state (Positive or Negative) until an opposing condition is met, allowing for continuous trend tracking on the overlay.
