The Volatility/Volume Impact indicator provides a statistical framework to study how different states of market volume and volatility influence price movements over time. By comparing current activity against historical medians or averages, it helps traders identify whether a specific asset thrives during high-activity periods or trends more effectively during low-volatility environments.

Usage

The tool is designed to highlight which market conditions—high or low volume/volatility—are most strongly correlated with price direction.

  • Volume Impact: The script tracks two metrics: Positive Volume Deviation (PVD) for periods when volume is above the reference and Negative Volume Deviation (NVD) for periods when it is below. If PVD shows a higher correlation to price movement, the line is colored green, indicating that high volume is the primary driver. If NVD correlates more, it is colored red, suggesting the asset trends better on low volume.
  • Volatility Impact: Similar logic is applied to volatility. High volatility (above the reference) and low volatility (below the reference) impacts are calculated and compared against price action.
  • Visual Interpretation: Traders can use these plots to determine the "character" of an asset. For example, some indices may show a strong correlation between price growth and low volatility, while certain cryptocurrencies might only trend significantly during high-volatility spikes.

Details

The indicator functions by accumulating price changes based on the state of the source (Volume or Volatility) relative to a reference level (e.g., a median or moving average).

  1. Reference Comparison: It compares the current traded volume or ATR-based volatility to a user-defined reference (Median, SMA, EMA, etc.).
  2. Accumulation: If the source is above the reference, the price change is added to the "High" impact variable. If below, it is added to the "Low" impact variable.
  3. Correlation Analysis: A Pearson correlation coefficient is calculated between these accumulated values and the actual closing price over a specified range.
  4. Color Coding: The plot representing the state with the higher correlation is highlighted (Green for high, Red for low), while the other remains a neutral silver color.

Settings

ATR

  • ATR MA Type: Selects the moving average type used for the ATR calculation (EMA, SMA, HMA, RMA, etc.).
  • ATR Length: Sets the lookback period for the volatility calculation.

High/Low Reference

  • MA Type: Determines the method used to establish the "normal" baseline for volume and volatility (Median, Linear Regression, or various MAs).
  • Length: The lookback period used to calculate the reference baseline.

Correlation

  • Percentage: When enabled, uses percentage price changes for accumulation instead of absolute point differences.
  • Range: The lookback length used for calculating the correlation between the impact metrics and the price.

FAQ

How do I use the Volatility/Volume Impact indicator?

You can use it to identify the structural drivers of a trend. If "Low Volatility Impact" is highlighted red and trending with price, it suggests the market is in a steady, low-noise uptrend.

Can I overlay this on my main chart?

Yes, for better visualization of how the impact metrics move alongside price, you can move the indicator to the "Existing Pane Above" or change its settings to overlay.

How can I get access to this tool?

You can get access on the LuxAlgo Library for charting platforms like TradingView, MetaTrader (MT4/MT5), and NinjaTrader for free.
