The MACD Bands - Multi Timeframe [TradeMaster Lite] indicator provides a customizable momentum analysis tool that integrates multi-timeframe capabilities with volatility-based deviation bands. This script aims to enhance the classic MACD by allowing traders to filter signals through higher timeframe trends and identify extreme momentum shifts using standard deviation bands around the signal line.

Usage

The Usage section highlights how to interpret the various components of the script for trend and volatility analysis.

  • Trend Identification: Use the MACD Line and Signal Line crossovers to identify potential bullish or bearish momentum shifts. The MACD line changes color based on its position relative to the signal line (green for bullish, red for bearish).
  • Volatility Monitoring: The deviation bands act as a threshold for "unusual" volatility. When the MACD line extends beyond these bands, it suggests an overextended state or the beginning of a strong trending move.
  • Multi-Timeframe Analysis: By selecting a higher timeframe in the settings, you can view macro trend data on your current chart. For example, viewing 1-hour MACD data on a 15-minute chart helps ensure lower-timeframe entries align with the higher-timeframe trend.
  • Histogram Analysis: The histogram features conditional coloring to show the acceleration or deceleration of momentum, helping to spot weakening trends before a crossover occurs.

Details

The script is constructed using a flexible core that supports 9 different moving average types for the calculation of the MACD and Signal lines. Unlike standard MACD tools, this version calculates a standard deviation (multiplied by a user-defined factor) around the Signal line to create dynamic bands.

Settings

  • Source: Determines the price data used for calculations (e.g., Close, Open, HL2).
  • Timeframe: Sets the timeframe for the MACD calculation. Only timeframes higher than the current chart are recommended to maintain data integrity.
  • MA Type: Selects the moving average algorithm used across the script. Options include:
    • SMA: Simple Moving Average.
    • SMMA: Smoothed Moving Average.
    • EMA: Exponential Moving Average.
    • DEMA: Double Exponential Moving Average.
    • TEMA: Triple Exponential Moving Average.
    • LSMA: Least Squares Moving Average.
    • HMA: Hull Moving Average.
    • VWMA: Volume Weighted Moving Average.
    • WMA: Weighted Moving Average.
  • Band Mult: Adjusts the width of the deviation bands based on the standard deviation of the signal line.
  • Lengths (Fast, Slow, Signal): Customizes the period lengths for the MACD fast line, slow line, and signal line calculation.

FAQ

How can I use the different MA types effectively? Different moving averages have different lag profiles. For example, DEMA and TEMA are designed to reduce lag, while SMA provides a smoother, more traditional response.

Why does the MACD line disappear when I change the timeframe? Ensure the selected timeframe is higher than your current chart timeframe. The script is currently optimized to display "higher-to-lower" timeframe data to avoid repainting issues.
