The Jurik Moving Average (JMA) is designed to solve the conflict between lag and smoothness. Unlike a simple moving average (SMA) or exponential moving average (EMA), which often suffer from significant lag or "overshoot" during rapid price changes, the JMA uses a complex multi-stage smoothing algorithm.
The core mechanism involves a volatility model that calculates the relative volatility of the source input. This model determines a dynamic "alpha" (smoothing factor). When volatility increases, the algorithm adjusts its internal speed to track price more closely; when volatility decreases, it increases smoothing to filter out market noise. The "Phase" parameter further allows users to control the trade-off between the indicator's tracking speed and its tendency to overshoot the price action.
Settings
- Source: Determines the price data point used for the calculation (e.g., Close, Open, High, Low).
- Log Transform: When enabled, applies a logarithmic transformation to the source data before calculation and reverts it afterward, useful for long-term charts or volatile assets.
- Length: Sets the lookback period for the moving average. Higher values increase smoothness but increase lag.
- Phase: Adjusts the responsiveness of the filter. Values range from -100 (more smoothing/lag) to +100 (faster response/less lag).
- Plotting Offset: Shifts the visual plot of the JMA forward or backward in time on the chart.
