Bollinger RSI Bands
Sep 17, 2023

The Bollinger RSI Bands indicator provides a comprehensive framework for analyzing momentum and volatility by projecting Bollinger Bands directly onto the Relative Strength Index (RSI). This tool is designed to help traders identify overbought/oversold conditions, trend transitions, and potential breakout points through a unified momentum-based oscillator.
Usage
The indicator can be used to gauge market strength and potential exhaustion points using several visual components:
- RSI Bollinger Bands: When the RSI line touches or exceeds the upper or lower Bollinger Bands, it indicates extreme momentum expansion. A cross back inside the bands can signal a potential mean reversion or trend exhaustion.
- Candle Coloration: The oscillator features built-in candle plotting. Green candles indicate a bullish momentum trend where the smoothed RSI close is above its open, while red candles indicate bearish momentum.
- Trend Reversals: Observing the relationship between the RSI and the RSI-based Moving Average (the middle band of the Bollinger Bands) helps in identifying trend shifts. A crossover above the MA suggests bullish momentum, while a crossunder suggests bearish momentum.
- Volatility Analysis: Squeezing Bollinger Bands on the RSI scale indicate low volatility periods often preceding significant momentum breakouts.
Details
The Bollinger RSI Bands indicator operates by calculating a primary RSI value based on a user-defined source and length. It then applies a Moving Average (SMA, EMA, WMA, etc.) and a Standard Deviation calculation to that RSI line to create the Bollinger Bands.
Unique to this script is the smoothed RSI candle plotting. It calculates independent RSI values for Open, High, Low, and Close, then applies a smoothing Moving Average to each before plotting them as candles within the oscillator pane. This provides a clearer visual representation of "momentum price action" compared to a single line.
Settings
RSI Configuration
- RSI Length: The lookback period used to calculate the primary RSI line.
- Source: The price data used for the primary RSI calculation (e.g., Close, HL2).
Candle Settings
- Candles MA Type: The type of moving average used to smooth the RSI-based candles (SMA, EMA, WMA, SMMA, or VWMA).
- Candle Length: The RSI lookback period specifically for the candle calculations.
- Candle MA Length: The period for smoothing the RSI candles.
Bollinger Band Settings
- Bollinger MA Type: The type of moving average used for the Bollinger Band baseline.
- MA Length: The period used for the Bollinger Band baseline and standard deviation calculation.
- BB StdDev: The multiplier for the standard deviation to determine band width.
FAQ
How do I interpret the candle colors?
Green candles represent bullish momentum (RSI Close > RSI Open), while red candles represent bearish momentum (RSI Close < RSI Open).
What do the fixed 70/30 levels represent?
These are standard RSI exhaustion levels. The indicator combines these fixed levels with dynamic Bollinger Bands to provide both static and volatility-adjusted overbought/oversold signals.
