The Dual MA SD Oscillator indicator measures the spread between a fast and slow moving average and filters momentum signals using dynamic volatility-adjusted Standard Deviation bands.

Usage

The Dual MA SD Oscillator can be used to identify trend direction, momentum shifts, and volatility expansions. Traders typically use the indicator to confirm entries when the oscillator breaks out of its dynamic bands.

  • Bullish Momentum: A bullish signal is generated when the smoothed spread rises above the upper Standard Deviation band. This suggests that positive momentum is expanding beyond typical volatility levels.
  • Bearish Momentum: A bearish signal is generated when the smoothed spread drops below the lower Standard Deviation band, indicating strong downward momentum.
  • Trend Filtering: The indicator includes optional candle coloring to help traders stay aligned with the current trend. When the oscillator is above the upper band, candles turn bullish; when below the lower band, candles turn bearish.
  • Volatility Analysis: The width between the SD bands provides a visual representation of market volatility. Narrow bands suggest a consolidating market, while wider bands indicate higher volatility.

Details

The script is constructed by first calculating the difference (spread) between a fast Exponential Moving Average (EMA) and a slow EMA. This spread represents the raw momentum of the price action. To reduce market noise, the user can apply an additional EMA smoothing layer to this spread.

The core mechanism for signal generation involves calculating the Standard Deviation of the smoothed spread over a specific lookback period. Unlike static threshold oscillators, this method creates adaptive boundaries that expand during volatile periods and contract during quiet markets. A trade state is maintained until the opposite signal is triggered, ensuring a continuous trend-following output. The original concept for this logic was developed by SchizoQuant.

Settings

MA Settings

  • Source: Specifies the price data (e.g., Close, Open, High) used for the moving average calculations.
  • Fast Length: The period for the fast EMA. Smaller values make the oscillator more sensitive to recent price changes.
  • Slow Length: The period for the slow EMA. Larger values provide a more stable baseline for trend identification.

Smoothing

  • Smooth Length: The period for the EMA applied to the raw spread. Increasing this value creates a smoother oscillator and reduces whipsaw signals.

Standard Deviation

  • Upper SD Length: The lookback period used to calculate the volatility band for bullish signals.
  • Lower SD Length: The lookback period used to calculate the volatility band for bearish signals.

Visualization

  • Show Signals: Toggles the visibility of "BULL" and "BEAR" labels on the chart.
  • Color Bars: When enabled, this colors the price candles based on the current oscillator trend state.
  • Bullish Color: Sets the primary color for bullish signals, the oscillator histogram, and candle coloring.
  • Bearish Color: Sets the primary color for bearish signals, the oscillator histogram, and candle coloring.

FAQ

How do I interpret the signals from the Dual MA SD Oscillator? Signals are generated when the oscillator crosses outside its Standard Deviation bands. A cross above the upper band signals bullish momentum, while a cross below the lower band signals bearish momentum.

Can I adjust the sensitivity of the volatility bands? Yes, by adjusting the Upper and Lower SD Length settings. A longer length will make the bands react more slowly to recent price changes, while a shorter length will make them more responsive.
