The Anchored EMA/VWAP indicator provides a comprehensive suite of trend and momentum tools that calculate moving averages from a specific user-defined anchor point in time. It enables traders to analyze price action relative to significant events like earnings reports, news releases, or trend reversals by anchoring Exponential Moving Averages (EMAs), Volume-Weighted EMAs (VWEMAs), and a Volume-Weighted Average Price (VWAP) to a precise starting bar.

Usage

The Anchored EMA/VWAP can be used to identify trend shifts and institutional value levels following a specific market event. Users can manually select an anchor point by clicking on a chart bar or setting a specific date and time in the settings.

Trend Identification

By using multiple EMAs and VWEMAs, traders can observe the alignment of momentum. For example, a "Golden Cross" scenario—where a shorter-period anchored EMA crosses above a longer-period one—can be visually signaled with customizable markers.

Mean Reversion and Support/Resistance

The anchored VWAP acts as a dynamic level of support or resistance. Since it is volume-weighted and anchored to a specific event, it represents the average price paid by participants since that event, making it a critical level for identifying fair value.

Multi-Timeframe Analysis

The tool allows you to compute these anchored metrics on a higher timeframe (e.g., 1-hour) while viewing them on a lower timeframe (e.g., 5-minute). This helps in aligning day-trading entries with broader trend contexts.

Details

The script utilizes Pine Script v6 to perform cumulative calculations starting strictly from the specified anchor time.

  • EMA Logic: Unlike standard EMAs that use a fixed historical window, these are initialized at the anchor point using the source price and then calculated exponentially forward.
  • VWEMA Logic: These averages incorporate volume into the exponential calculation, offering a more responsive trend line in high-volume environments compared to standard EMAs.
  • VWAP Logic: This is a classic cumulative volume-weighted average price that resets or begins at the anchor point.

FAQ

How do I change the starting point of the indicator?

You can set the "Anchor Mode" to manual and use the "Manual Anchor Time" input to select a specific bar on your chart where you want the calculations to begin.

What is the difference between the EMA and the VWEMA?

The EMA is a standard exponential moving average based only on price, while the VWEMA weights the exponential calculation by volume, making the indicator more sensitive to price moves that occur on high trading volume.
