The MACD Color Trawler tool identifies periods of synchronized momentum and trend direction by evaluating the relationship between the MACD line, its signal line, and a user-defined zero line threshold.

Usage

The MACD Color Trawler is used to identify high-probability trend segments by "trawling" for confluence between different layers of the MACD calculation.

  • Bullish Confluence: When the MACD line is above the trigger value and the histogram is positive, the bars and background highlight in green, suggesting a lower-risk environment for long positions.
  • Bearish Confluence: When the MACD line is below the trigger value and the histogram is negative, the bars and background highlight in red, suggesting a lower-risk environment for short positions.
  • Visual Aids: Users can toggle bar colors and background highlights to clearly see when these confluence conditions are met without looking away from the price action.

Details

This indicator treats the MACD-Histogram as a fourth derivative of price. The logic is structured as follows:

  1. First Derivative: 12-day and 26-day EMAs.
  2. Second Derivative: MACD Line (Fast EMA minus Slow EMA).
  3. Third Derivative: Signal Line (9-day EMA of the MACD Line).
  4. Fourth Derivative: Histogram (MACD Line minus Signal Line).

By checking if the Second Derivative (MACD Line position relative to zero) and the Fourth Derivative (Histogram direction) match, the script filters out "noisy" MACD signals where momentum might be shifting against the broader trend.

Settings

  • Fast Length: The period for the shorter Exponential Moving Average (default is 12).
  • Slow Length: The period for the longer Exponential Moving Average (default is 26).
  • Signal Length: The period for the Signal Line EMA (default is 9).
  • Enable Bar Color?: Toggles the coloring of the price bars based on MACD confluence.
  • Enable Background Color?: Toggles the background highlighting based on MACD confluence.
  • Zeroline Trigger Value?: Sets the threshold for the MACD line to determine the trend bias (default is 0).
