The Volume Anomaly Reversal Detection indicator identifies potential market reversals by detecting statistically significant volume spikes that often precede trend shifts. It combines directional volume Z-score analysis with a dynamic ATR-based trend filter to provide actionable signals for traders looking to capitalize on market exhaustion or capitulation.

Usage

The tool is designed to catch trend reversals by identifying "anomalies"—volume spikes that exceed a specific standard deviation threshold.

  • Entry Signals: Confirmed signals appear as green "BUY" or red "SELL" labels. A BUY signal is generated when a bearish volume anomaly is followed by a bullish trend flip within a specific confirmation window. Conversely, a SELL signal triggers when a bullish anomaly is followed by a bearish trend flip.
  • Early Warnings: Small diamond markers (⬥) indicate volume spikes before a trend reversal is confirmed. These markers serve as early alerts to watch for price action shifts.
  • Trend Context: The indicator features dynamic trend bands. Users should typically look for signals that align with broader market structures, using the bands to visually gauge the current directional bias.

Details

The VARD System operates on two primary layers:

  1. Volume Analysis: The script samples directional volume (buying vs. selling pressure) from a user-defined lower timeframe. It calculates a Z-score based on the formula Z = (Current Volume - Average Volume) / Standard Deviation. A score above the threshold (default 3.0) indicates an anomaly.
  2. Trend Filtering: It utilizes a custom trend-following algorithm based on ATR bands. This ensures that signals are only confirmed when price momentum shifts in the direction of the detected volume exhaustion.

Settings

Volume Analysis

  • Analysis Timeframe: The timeframe used to sample buying and selling pressure.
  • Statistical Lookback: The number of bars used to calculate the mean and standard deviation for the Z-score.
  • Anomaly Sensitivity: The Z-score threshold required to trigger an anomaly detection. Lower values result in more frequent signals.

Signal Timing

  • Confirmation Window: The maximum number of bars allowed between the detection of a volume anomaly and the trend reversal for a signal to be valid.

Trend Detection

  • ATR Multiplier: Determines the width of the trend bands; higher values make the trend filter less sensitive to minor price fluctuations.
  • Trend Period: The lookback period for the ATR calculation.

  • Show Trend Bands: Toggles the colored background zones representing the active trend.
  • Signal Label Size: Adjusts the size of the BUY/SELL labels on the chart.

FAQ

How do I interpret the diamond markers?

The diamond markers indicate that a volume anomaly has been detected but the trend has not yet reversed. These are "setups" rather than confirmed entry signals.

What is the best timeframe for this indicator?

While the script works on all timeframes, it is most effective on the 1H and 4H charts where volume anomalies typically represent more significant market participants.
