Bollinger Bands And Aroon Scalping
Sep 7, 2021

The Bollinger Bands And Aroon Scalping indicator is a trend-following strategy tool designed to identify dip-buying opportunities in established uptrends while minimizing exposure during market downturns. By combining the volatility-based insights of Bollinger Bands with the trend strength measurement of the Aroon indicator, it seeks to filter out low-probability trades and capture moves during high-momentum periods.
Usage
The strategy is primarily used to identify entries during temporary pullbacks within a broader bullish trend.
- Entry Signal: A long position is triggered when the price crosses below the Bollinger Band basis line (the 20-period SMA) while the Aroon Up indicator is above a specific threshold (default 90). This ensures the trade is taken during a temporary dip while a strong uptrend is still intact.
- Exit Signal: The position is closed when the price crosses below the Upper Bollinger Band or if the trend strength deteriorates, signaled by the Aroon Up falling below a predefined stop level (default 70).
The tool is optimized for the 4-hour timeframe, though it can be applied to the 1-hour timeframe for higher trade frequency, albeit typically with lower per-trade profitability.
Details
This script integrates two distinct technical concepts:
- Bollinger Bands: Used here to define the mean (basis) and extremes of price action. The basis line acts as the "dip" target for entries.
- Aroon Indicator: Calculated over a longer period (default 288) to provide a macro view of the trend. It measures the time since the last high relative to the lookback period, acting as a filter to ensure the strategy only operates in verified bullish environments.
By requiring the Aroon Up to be at extreme highs (90+), the strategy avoids "catching a falling knife" during genuine downtrends.
Settings
Bollinger Bands
- BB Length: Sets the lookback period for the basis line and standard deviation calculations.
- Source: Determines the price data used for the bands (default is Close).
- StdDev: Adjusts the multiplier for the upper and lower bands.
- Offset: Shifts the Bollinger Bands forward or backward in time.
Aroon
- Aroon Length: The lookback period for the Aroon indicator (default 288 for long-term trend filtering).
- Aroon Confirmation: The threshold the Aroon Up must exceed to allow a long entry.
- Aroon Stop: The level below which a long trade is closed due to weakening trend strength.
Backtesting & Date Range
- From/Thru Month/Day/Year: Defines the specific time window for historical backtesting.
- Show Date Range: Toggles the visibility of the date range filter.
FAQ
How do I access the Bollinger Bands And Aroon Scalping?
You can get access on the LuxAlgo Library for charting platforms like TradingView, MetaTrader (MT4/MT5), and NinjaTrader for free.
Which timeframe is best for this strategy?
Based on internal testing, the 4-hour timeframe provides a balanced frequency of trades with higher reliability, whereas lower timeframes like the 1-hour increase trade volume but may reduce overall profit factors.
Can this be used for shorting?
In its current implementation, the script is focused on a long-only "buy the dip" approach in bullish markets. To short, one would look for price crosses above the basis line during strong downtrends indicated by the Aroon Down.
