Bollinger Bands MTF
Sep 2, 2015

The Bollinger Bands MTF indicator provides a simplified way to view higher time frame volatility and trend structures directly on your current chart resolution.
Usage
The Bollinger Bands MTF is primarily used for scalping and trend identification by projecting broader market volatility onto lower time frame charts. Traders can use the expanded bands to identify potential reversal points or trend exhaustion levels that are governed by higher time frame price action.
For example, when viewing a 1-minute chart, the script automatically adjusts the calculation to represent a 5-minute Bollinger Band. This allows users to stay aligned with the primary trend without constantly switching between different chart intervals.
Details
The script functions by applying a dynamic multiplier to the user-defined length based on the current chart's timeframe. It uses a predefined logic to determine the "Higher Time Frame" equivalent:
- 1m or 3m charts use a 5x multiplier.
- 5m charts use a 3x multiplier.
- 15m or 30m charts use a 2x multiplier.
- Hourly or 4-hour charts use a 4x multiplier.
The core calculations utilize a Simple Moving Average (SMA) and Standard Deviation based on this adjusted length to plot the basis, upper, and lower bands.
Settings
- Length: The base lookback period for the Bollinger Bands calculation.
- Source: The price data used for the calculation (default is Close).
- Multiplier: The standard deviation multiplier that determines the width of the bands.
