The Bollinger Bands indicator provides a multi-layered volatility framework by merging two sets of Bollinger Bands with different standard deviation multipliers to help traders identify overextended price action and potential trend exhaustion.

Usage

The tool can be used to identify volatility zones and potential reversal points. By plotting two sets of bands (typically at 1 and 2 standard deviations), traders can visualize "volatility channels."

  • Trend Strength: Price remaining between the inner and outer bands often suggests a strong trending environment.
  • Mean Reversion: Price touching or exceeding the outer bands (Multiplier 1) may indicate an overbought or oversold condition, suggesting a potential move back toward the basis (SMA).
  • Breakouts: A close outside the outermost bands can signal a significant volatility expansion or the start of a new trend.

Details

This script calculates a central Basis line using a Simple Moving Average (SMA). From this basis, it projects two sets of upper and lower bands based on the standard deviation of the source price over a specified period. By default, the script uses a 20-period length and provides two levels of standard deviation (defaulting to 1.0 and 2.0), allowing for a more granular view of price distribution compared to standard single-band versions.

Settings

  • Length: Determines the lookback period for the SMA basis and the standard deviation calculation.
  • Source: The price data used for calculations (e.g., Close, Open, HL2).
  • Multiplier 1: The standard deviation multiplier for the outermost bands.
  • Multiplier 2: The standard deviation multiplier for the innermost bands.

FAQ

How do I interpret the different band colors? The outermost bands represent the higher standard deviation setting, typically used to identify extreme price movements, while the inner bands represent a lower deviation for tighter volatility tracking.

Can I use this for scalping or long-term trading? Yes, the indicator is versatile; you can adjust the "Length" setting to be shorter for scalping or longer for swing trading and trend following.
