VWAP Ribbons/Bands
Oct 5, 2019

The VWAP Ribbons/Bands indicator provides a comprehensive visualization of price volatility and trend direction by projecting multiple standard deviation bands around the Volume Weighted Average Price (VWAP).
Usage
The VWAP Ribbons/Bands tool can be used to identify potential overbought and oversold zones, as well as trend strength. When price remains near the VWAP line, it suggests a period of consolidation or equilibrium. As price moves toward the outer bands, it indicates increasing momentum or volatility.
Traders often use these bands in the following ways:
- Trend Identification: The central VWAP line changes color based on the relationship between the VWAP and a simple moving average, helping to visualize short-term trend shifts.
- Mean Reversion: Extreme deviations from the VWAP (reaching the outer bands) may signal potential exhaustion points where price might return to the mean.
- Volatility Expansion: The widening or narrowing of the ribbons visually represents changes in market volatility based on the selected standard deviation length.
Details
This script calculates the standard VWAP and applies a series of user-defined multipliers to a rolling standard deviation. Unlike standard Bollinger Bands which use a Simple Moving Average as a baseline, this indicator uses the VWAP, which incorporates volume data to provide a more significant "anchor" for intraday price action. The tool supports up to eight distinct bands, allowing for a "ribbon" effect that illustrates various levels of price deviation.
Settings
- Source: Determines the price data used for both the VWAP and standard deviation calculations.
- Smoothing Length: Sets the lookback period for the standard deviation calculation, affecting the width and responsiveness of the bands.
- VWAP Multipliers (1-8): Individual inputs to set the standard deviation distance for each band level.
- Use VWAP (4-8): Boolean toggles to enable or disable specific outer bands for a cleaner chart interface.
