Chop & Breakout Scout (C&B_Scout)
Aug 1, 2022

The Chop & Breakout Scout (C&B_Scout) indicator is a centered oscillator designed to help traders distinguish between low-volatility "chop" zones and actionable price breakouts based on ATR-normalized volatility. It provides a visual framework to avoid sideways price action and identify trend-aligned momentum shifts by comparing price distance from a baseline against current market volatility.
Usage
The Usage section highlights how to interpret the oscillator and its visual cues:
- Identifying Chop: When the main CBS line remains within the shaded central area (the "Chop Zone"), the price is moving within a specified range of Average True Ranges (ATR) from the baseline. This suggests a period of consolidation where trading may be less favorable.
- Identifying Breakouts: A breakout occurs when the CBS line exits the shaded zone.
- Bullish Breakout: Look for the CBS line to cross above the upper chop level while the background is green (indicating price is above the long-term filter).
- Bearish Breakout: Look for the CBS line to cross below the lower chop level while the background is red (indicating price is below the long-term filter).
- Filtering: The indicator uses an EMA filter to color the central zone. Traders should ideally only look for upside breakouts when the zone is green and downside breakouts when the zone is red to ensure alignment with the prevailing trend.
- Aggressive vs. Conservative Entry: Conservative traders may wait for a full exit of the chop zone, while aggressive traders might monitor the zero-line cross as an early signal of momentum shifting away from the baseline.
Details
The C&B_Scout operates similarly to a Stochastic oscillator but uses ATR units instead of a fixed percentage-based channel. This creates a non-restricted oscillator that adapts to the current timeframe and asset volatility.
The "Baseline" is calculated as the midpoint of a Donchian Channel (Highest High + Lowest Low / 2) over a user-defined length. The distance between the current price and this baseline is then divided by the ATR value. This normalization expresses the price deviation in "ATR units," allowing for a consistent definition of "Chop" across different market conditions.
Settings
- Price: The source input used for calculations (default is Close).
- Baseline Length: Determines the lookback period for the Donchian-based baseline calculation.
- TR Avg Length: The lookback period for the Average True Range (ATR) calculation.
- ATR Calculation: Choose between different moving average types (RMA, SMA, EMA, WMA) for the ATR smoothing.
- Chop Level: Defines the threshold (in ATR units) for the shaded chop zone. A value of 0.5 means the zone extends 0.5 ATR above and below the baseline.
- Smooth: The length of the WMA smoothing applied to the main CBS line to reduce noise.
- EMA Filter: The length of the EMA used to determine the trend-aligned background color (Long vs. Short mode).
- Show CBS Cloud?: Toggles a visual area fill for the smoothed CBS line.
FAQ
How do I access Chop & Breakout Scout (C&B_Scout)?
You can get access on the LuxAlgo Library for charting platforms like TradingView, MetaTrader (MT4/MT5), and NinjaTrader for free.
What does it mean when the CBS line is inside the shaded area?
It indicates the price is currently within the "Chop Zone," meaning it hasn't moved far enough from the baseline (relative to ATR) to be considered a significant breakout.
Can I change the sensitivity of the breakout signals?
Yes, you can adjust the "Chop Level" setting. Lowering the value will make the indicator more sensitive to breakouts, while increasing it will require more significant price movement to exit the chop zone.
