The Volatility Regime Supertrend indicator provides an adaptive trailing trend system that automatically adjusts its sensitivity based on historical market volatility cycles. By transitioning between tighter and wider multipliers during periods of compression and expansion, it aims to reduce false signals in ranging markets while maintaining trend capture during high-volatility breakouts.

Usage

The Volatility Regime Supertrend can be used to identify trend direction and potential entry/exit points through its color-coded bands and signal markers. Unlike a standard Supertrend that uses a fixed multiplier, this tool adapts to the current market state:

  • Bullish Trend: Indicated when the price is above the band (typically green). A "Long" triangle marker appears when the trend flips from bearish to bullish.
  • Bearish Trend: Indicated when the price is below the band (typically red). A "Short" triangle marker appears when the trend flips from bullish to bearish.
  • Compression Regime: When the market is quiet, the indicator tightens the multiplier (defined by the Compression Multiplier setting), allowing for more aggressive trailing and earlier exits if the range breaks.
  • Expansion Regime: During volatile moves, the indicator widens the multiplier (defined by the Expansion Multiplier setting) to avoid being prematurely stopped out by normal market noise.

The "Speed" setting is particularly useful for fine-tuning responsiveness. A lower speed creates smoother, slower-moving bands, while a higher speed allows the bands to track price action more closely.

Details

The script utilizes Bollinger Bandwidth to determine the volatility regime. It calculates the current bandwidth and ranks it against a lookback period (Regime Ranking Period) to produce a percentile score.

  1. Regime Detection: Bandwidth below the "Compression Percentile" is classified as a squeeze, while bandwidth above the "Expansion Percentile" is classified as an expansion.
  2. Dynamic Multiplier: The script interpolates between the user-defined Compression and Expansion multipliers based on this percentile rank. This multiplier is then smoothed via an EMA to ensure fluid transitions between market states.
  3. Modified Trailing Logic: While it follows the standard Supertrend logic of tracking the highest/lowest points, it adds a "Speed Alpha" component. This acts as a smoothing factor for the band's movement, providing a balance between reactive price tracking and trend stability.

Settings

Supertrend Core

  • ATR Length: The lookback period for the Average True Range calculation.
  • Compression Multiplier: The ATR multiplier used during quiet, low-volatility markets.
  • Expansion Multiplier: The ATR multiplier used during high-volatility, trending markets.
  • Speed: Controls the tracking speed of the bands (1 = slow/smooth, 10 = fast/reactive).

Volatility Regime

  • Bandwidth Lookback: The period used for the initial Bollinger Bandwidth calculation.
  • Regime Ranking Period: The number of bars used to determine the percentile rank of the current volatility.
  • Compression Percentile: The threshold below which the market is considered to be in a compression regime.
  • Expansion Percentile: The threshold above which the market is considered to be in an expansion regime.

Style Settings

  • Colour Choice: Pre-defined color templates (Default, Modern, Cool, Monochrome).
  • Color Candles?: Toggles trend-based candle coloring.
  • Show Signal Markers?: Toggles the triangle markers on trend flips.
  • Show Trend Fill?: Toggles the background fill between the price and the Supertrend line.
  • Show Regime Background?: Enables subtle background highlights for compression and expansion zones.
  • Use Custom Colors?: Allows overriding the templates with user-selected colors.

FAQ

How do I access Volatility Regime Supertrend?

You can get access on the LuxAlgo Library for charting platforms like TradingView, MetaTrader (MT4/MT5), and NinjaTrader for free.

What is the difference between this and a normal Supertrend?

A normal Supertrend uses a fixed multiplier regardless of market conditions. This version measures whether volatility is historically high or low and adjusts the multiplier dynamically to better fit the current environment.

Can I use this for scalping or swing trading?

Yes. By adjusting the "Speed" and "Regime Ranking Period" settings, you can tune the indicator for different timeframes. Higher speed settings are generally preferred for shorter timeframes, while lower speeds help filter noise on daily or weekly charts.
