The Momentum and Acceleration indicator is an oscillator designed to determine changes in trend velocity by calculating price momentum and its second derivative, acceleration. This tool provides a unique perspective on market dynamics by accessing historical series values directly rather than relying on traditional moving averages, allowing for a more responsive analysis of directional shifts.

Usage

The tool can be used to identify trend strength and potential exhaustion points. Traders can monitor the interaction between Momentum (1st Derivative) and Acceleration (2nd Derivative) to anticipate price reversals or continuations.

  • Momentum (1st Derivative): Represents the rate of change of price or volume. When momentum is positive and rising, it indicates a strengthening bullish trend.
  • Acceleration (2nd Derivative): Represents the rate of change of momentum. Acceleration often leads momentum, providing early signals of momentum slowing down or picking up.
  • Scaling: By enabling the "Divide calculation by length" setting, the indicator mimics a derivative formula ($dPrice/dTime$). Disabling this can sometimes make the acceleration fluctuations easier to visualize.
  • Input Flexibility: Users can apply the calculation to price source only, volume only, or a combination of both (Source * Volume) to analyze different market dimensions.

Details

Unlike many standard oscillators that smooth data through moving averages, this script calculates derivatives using the difference between current values and those from a specified lookback period (length). This raw calculation method preserves the original characteristics of the price action. The script also incorporates a gradient framework to visualize the intensity of advances and declines, helping traders gauge the "heat" of the current movement relative to historical extremes.

Settings

General Settings

  • Source: The price data point used for the calculation (e.g., Close, HL2).
  • Length: The lookback period used to calculate momentum and acceleration.
  • Modifier: Determines if the calculation is applied to price, volume, or price multiplied by volume.
  • Divide calculation by length?: Toggles the derivative scaling ($dPrice/dTime$).

1st Derivative - Momentum

  • Show?: Toggles the visibility of the Momentum line.
  • Grow/Fall: Colors for the Momentum line when it is increasing or decreasing.
  • Bull/Bear Fill: Base colors for the gradient area fill relative to the zero line.

2nd Derivative - Acceleration

  • Show?: Toggles the visibility of the Acceleration line.
  • Grow/Fall: Colors for the Acceleration line when it is increasing or decreasing.
  • Bull/Bear Fill: Base colors for the gradient area fill relative to the zero line.

Plot Color and Label Settings

  • Gradient 'Intensity': Adjusts how quickly the gradient reaches full opacity.
  • Gradient Constant: Shifts the baseline transparency of the fills.
  • Transparency Limit: Sets the maximum allowed transparency for the gradients.
  • Fill Gradient?: Enables or disables the visual area fills.

FAQ

How do I interpret the Acceleration line?

The Acceleration line shows if Momentum is speeding up or slowing down. If Momentum is positive but Acceleration is negative, it suggests the bullish trend is losing its "push" and may be nearing a reversal.

What is the benefit of not using moving averages?

By avoiding moving averages, the indicator reduces lag and provides a mathematically direct representation of the rate of change between two specific points in time.
