Exponential/Simple Moving Average Ribbon 12
Feb 4, 2018

The Exponential/Simple Moving Average Ribbon 12 indicator provides a customizable visualization of up to 24 concurrent moving averages to identify trend direction, support and resistance levels, and momentum shifts.
Usage
The Usage section describes how the script can be used to analyze market trends. By plotting multiple moving averages (MAs) simultaneously, users can observe the expansion and contraction of the ribbon to determine market volatility and trend strength.
- Trend Identification: When the ribbon is fanned out with shorter-term MAs above longer-term MAs, it indicates a strong bullish trend. Conversely, shorter-term MAs below longer-term MAs indicate a bearish trend.
- Support and Resistance: The ribbon acts as a dynamic zone of support or resistance. Prices often pull back into the ribbon before continuing the primary trend.
- Crossovers: Users can monitor when the fastest MA crosses the slowest MA to identify potential long-term trend reversals.
- Customization: Each of the 24 lines can be toggled on or off, allowing for a cleaner chart or a denser ribbon depending on the trader's preference.
Details
The indicator is constructed using a series of either Simple Moving Averages (SMA) or Exponential Moving Averages (EMA). The core logic allows each individual line to be calculated independently, providing significant flexibility compared to standard ribbons that use a single calculation type.
The script includes a dynamic coloring mechanism based on the slope of the moving averages. If the current MA value is greater than or equal to its value two bars ago, it is colored green (bullish); if it is lower, it is colored red (bearish). As the periods increase, the line thickness also increases, with the longest-term averages (MA 19 through MA 24) having the highest visual weight to represent the primary trend direction.
Settings
- Source: Determines the price data used for all moving average calculations (e.g., Close, Open, High, Low).
- MA Length (1-24): Sets the lookback period for each individual moving average line.
- Show (1-24): A checkbox to enable or disable the visibility of a specific moving average on the chart.
- Use EMA (1-24): A toggle to switch between an Exponential Moving Average (when checked) and a Simple Moving Average (when unchecked) for that specific line.
FAQ
How do the colors change on the ribbon? The colors are determined by the price momentum of each individual moving average. A line turns green when its value is rising and red when its value is falling relative to two bars prior.
Can I mix SMAs and EMAs in the same ribbon? Yes, each of the 24 lines has an independent "Use EMA" setting, allowing you to create a hybrid ribbon containing both calculation types.
