The Market Structure (SMS) indicator provides a comprehensive price-action framework designed to visually map swing highs, swing lows, and key structural levels for trend analysis. By focusing on pure price structure rather than lagging calculations, it helps traders identify market shifts and liquidity zones across various timeframes.

Usage

The Market Structure (SMS) tool can be used to identify the current market bias and potential reversal zones. Traders can use the "SH" (Swing High) and "SL" (Swing Low) labels to determine if the market is making Higher Highs/Lows (bullish) or Lower Highs/Lows (bearish).

  • Bullish Setups: Look for price holding above the most recent Swing Low (SL). A break above the recent Swing High (SH) often indicates a continuation of bullish momentum.
  • Bearish Setups: Look for price failing to break a recent Swing High. A breakdown below a confirmed Swing Low suggests a potential downside continuation.
  • Support & Resistance: The levels extended from identified swings act as future reaction zones where price may stall or reverse.

Details

The indicator utilizes a pivot-based detection algorithm to identify significant structural points. It requires a specific number of bars on either side of a peak or trough (defined by the Pivot Length) to confirm a swing. The script also includes advanced filtering logic, such as ADX thresholds and session-based volatility filters, to reduce chart noise and avoid false breakouts during low-probability trading windows.

Settings

  • Pivot Length: The number of bars required on each side to confirm a swing high or low.
  • Signal Mode: When enabled, the indicator filters out redundant Break of Structure (BOS) signals in the same direction.
  • Swing High/Low Color: Customizes the visual color of the SH and SL labels.
  • Structure Line Color: Adjusts the color of the lines connecting structural points.
  • ATR Length: Sets the period for the Average True Range calculation used for volatility measurement.
  • Magic Length / Fast Swing Length: Internal parameters used to fine-tune the detection of secondary market movements and Fair Value Gaps.

Time / Session Settings

  • Timezone: Set your local timezone for accurate session filtering.
  • Morning Volatility: Defines the specific time range to avoid during the market open.
  • Avoid Morning Noise: Toggle to exclude signals generated during volatile opening periods.
  • Auto-Exit Hour/Minutes: Settings used to define a daily cutoff time for intraday analysis.

FAQ

How do I use the SH and SL labels?

SH stands for Swing High and SL stands for Swing Low. These represent critical peaks and troughs in price. When price breaks an SH, it often indicates a bullish breakout, while breaking an SL suggests bearish momentum.

What is the Pivot Length setting?

The Pivot Length determines how "significant" a swing must be. A higher value will identify major structural turns but will be slower to update, while a lower value identifies smaller, more frequent intraday swings.
