Breakout Scalper
Jul 24, 2018

The Breakout Scalper indicator is a trend-following momentum tool designed to identify breakout opportunities using dual-window price midpoints and a dynamic cloud filter. It helps traders capture short-to-medium-term price movements by visualizing trend strength and providing clear entry/exit stop levels.
Usage
The Breakout Scalper is used to detect shifts in momentum when an "Instant Price" (EMA) crosses significant midpoint levels. The indicator displays a "cloud" formed between a Fast Midpoint and a Slow Midpoint.
- Long Conditions: A buy signal is generated when the Instant Price is above the Fast Midpoint and the cloud expansion exceeds the user-defined minimum ATR multiplier. The strategy then places a buy stop at the Slow High.
- Short Conditions: A sell signal is generated when the Instant Price is below the Fast Midpoint and the cloud contraction (negative) exceeds the minimum ATR multiplier. A sell stop is placed at the Slow Low.
- Exits: The tool utilizes trailing exit stops based on the most recent price extremes (Fast/Slow Lows for longs, Highs for shorts). Additionally, it provides a "manual close" logic when the cloud flips direction, signaling sideways movement or a trend reversal.
Details
The script calculates the midpoints of two distinct lookback periods: the Fast Window and the Slow Window. The interaction between these midpoints creates a directional bias:
- Fast Midpoint: Represents the average of the highest high and lowest low over the short lookback.
- Slow Midpoint: Represents the average of price extremes over the longer lookback.
- Cloud ATR Multiplier: To filter out noise during low-volatility periods, the distance between the two midpoints is normalized by the Average True Range (ATR). A signal only becomes valid once the cloud width represents a significant percentage of the current volatility.
Settings
- Fast Window: The lookback period for the short-term price midpoint.
- Slow Window: The lookback period for the long-term price midpoint and ATR calculation.
- Instant Period: The EMA length used to represent the smoothed current price.
- Minimum Cloud ATR Multiplier: The threshold required for the cloud width (relative to ATR) to trigger a valid signal. Increasing this value requires stronger momentum to generate signals.
FAQ
How do I interpret the cloud colors?
A green cloud indicates bullish momentum exceeding the ATR threshold, a red cloud indicates bearish momentum, and a gray cloud indicates neutral or sideways market conditions.
What do the shapes on the chart represent?
Circles represent potential entry stop orders when signals are active. Crosses (X) represent active trailing exit stops once a position is held.
