The Linear Volume MACD indicator provides a comprehensive approach to momentum and trend detection by integrating volume-weighted price action with linear regression analysis. This tool aims to deliver clearer insights into market strength, helping traders identify trend shifts, volume anomalies, and potential reversal zones with greater precision than traditional MACD versions.

Usage

The indicator can be utilized across various market conditions by selecting one of the three primary signal modes. Each mode changes how the histogram and trend signals are calculated:

  • Linear Regression: This mode uses a smoothed linear regression of the MACD histogram to identify the underlying trend, reducing noise and highlighting directional conviction.
  • Strong/Weak Trend: Focuses on the acceleration or deceleration of the trend. It colors the histogram based on whether the linear regression value is increasing or decreasing, allowing traders to spot weakening momentum before a full reversal.
  • Volume MACD: Provides a classic volume-weighted MACD view, useful for spotting traditional divergences and basic momentum shifts.

Additionally, the script features dynamic Standard Deviation Bands. These bands (set at ±1 and ±2 standard deviations) act as volatility thresholds. When the histogram moves outside these bands, it indicates statistically significant momentum, often corresponding to volatility breakouts or overextended market conditions.

Details

The core calculation utilizes a volume-weighted average for the Fast and Slow EMAs. By multiplying the source price by volume before applying the moving averages, the resulting MACD more accurately reflects market participation. The Linear Regression component further processes the MACD histogram over a user-defined length, providing a reactive yet smooth signal line. The standard deviation bands are calculated over a long lookback period (default 200) to maintain a stable baseline for anomaly detection.

Settings

CORE

  • Source: The price data used for calculations (e.g., Close).
  • Signal Type: Switches between Linear Regression, Strong/Weak Trend, and Volume MACD logic.
  • Fast Length: The period for the shorter volume-weighted EMA.
  • Slow Length: The period for the longer volume-weighted EMA.
  • Signal Smoothing: The EMA period used to smooth the MACD line.
  • LR Length: The lookback period for the linear regression calculation.

STDEV BANDS

  • Stdev Length: The lookback period for calculating the standard deviation thresholds.
  • Stdev Multiplier: Adjusts the width of the volatility bands.

COLORS

  • Custom Color Palette: Selection of built-in themes (Classic, Mystic, Accented, Royal).
  • Use Custom Palette: Enables manual selection of bullish and bearish colors.

FAQ

How do I interpret the background highlights?

The background changes color when the histogram exceeds the ±2 Standard Deviation bands, signaling potential overbought or oversold conditions based on recent volatility.

Can I use this for intraday trading?

Yes, the indicator is designed to work on any timeframe, though users may need to adjust the Fast/Slow lengths and LR Length to match the specific volatility of their chosen chart.
