Volume BasedSignalsMoving Averages

The True Moving VWAP indicator provides a volume-weighted moving average calculation that accurately reflects price action by weighting it against actual trading volume over a rolling window. This tool helps traders identify the true average price paid for an asset over specific periods, offering a more precise alternative to standard time-weighted moving averages.

Usage

The True Moving VWAP can be used to identify trend direction and potential support or resistance levels. By using two different lengths (Short and Long), traders can observe crossovers to identify shifts in momentum.

  • Trend Identification: When the Short VWAP is above the Long VWAP, it indicates a bullish trend. Conversely, when the Short VWAP is below the Long VWAP, it indicates a bearish trend.
  • Mean Reversion: Price often gravitates toward the VWAP; significant deviations from these lines may suggest overextended market conditions.
  • Crossover Signals: The indicator includes built-in alerts for when the Short Length VWAP crosses the Long Length VWAP, which can be used as entry or exit triggers.

Details

Unlike standard Simple Moving Averages (SMA) which treat every price point equally regardless of the activity occurring at that price, the True Moving VWAP weights each price point by the volume of that specific bar.

The calculation follows a rolling window approach:

  1. It sums the product of price and volume for the specified length.
  2. It sums the total volume for the same period.
  3. It divides the total price-volume product by the total volume.

This ensures that high-volume price action has a greater impact on the moving average than low-volume price action, providing a more "truthful" representation of market value over a moving window compared to traditional cumulative VWAPs that reset daily.

Settings

  • Short Length: Defines the lookback period for the faster, more reactive volume-weighted moving average.
  • Long Length: Defines the lookback period for the slower, trend-defining volume-weighted moving average.

FAQ

How do I use the True Moving VWAP for trend trading?

Traders typically look for the Short VWAP to stay above the Long VWAP to maintain a long bias, or below it to maintain a short bias.

How does this differ from a standard VWAP?

A standard VWAP is usually cumulative and resets at the start of a new session (e.g., daily). This indicator uses a moving window (like an SMA), but applies volume weighting to provide a continuous rolling average.
