The Daily Moving Average to Intraday Chart indicator projects the daily 20-period Exponential Moving Average (EMA) and the 100 and 200-period Simple Moving Averages (SMA) onto lower-timeframe charts to provide institutional-grade trend context and key support/resistance levels.

Usage

The Usage section describes how the script can be used to bridge the gap between daily trend analysis and intraday execution. Traders often use these specific daily moving averages to determine the "path of least resistance" for the day.

Trend Identification

By plotting daily averages on an intraday chart (such as the 5-minute or 15-minute timeframe), traders can quickly see if the current price is trading above or below major daily benchmarks. For example, staying above the Daily 20 EMA often signals a strong short-term bullish trend, while trading below the Daily 200 SMA suggests a long-term bearish environment.

Support and Resistance

The Daily 100 and 200 SMAs are widely watched by institutional participants. When price approaches these levels on an intraday basis, they often act as significant horizontal floors or ceilings. This tool allows traders to anticipate these interactions without needing to toggle between different chart intervals.

Alert Integration

The script includes built-in alert conditions for price crossovers with the Daily 20 EMA and Daily 200 SMA. This allows users to receive notifications the moment intraday price action interacts with these critical higher-timeframe levels.

Details

This indicator utilizes the request.security function to fetch data from the Daily ("D") resolution regardless of the timeframe currently viewed by the user. This ensures that the lines plotted remain consistent with the values seen on a standard daily chart. The calculation includes:

  • Daily 20 EMA: Used for tracking short-term momentum.
  • Daily 100 SMA: Used for identifying medium-term trend shifts.
  • Daily 200 SMA: Used for defining the primary long-term trend.

FAQ

Can I use this indicator on a Daily chart?

While the script will function, it is specifically designed for intraday charts (1m, 5m, 15m, 1h, etc.) to project daily values downward. On a daily chart, the lines will simply mirror the standard moving averages of that timeframe.

Why do the lines appear as steps on lower timeframes?

The lines appear as horizontal steps because the daily moving average value only updates once per day. Therefore, the value remains constant across all intraday bars within a single trading session.
