The Moving Average Combo and 0 Crossover indicator provides a multi-layered trend analysis framework by combining multiple exponential moving averages with a smoothed moving average to identify momentum shifts and trend reversals.

Usage

The Usage section describes how the script can be used to identify market trends and potential entry points. The tool utilizes a cluster of three Exponential Moving Averages (EMA 21, 50, and 80) acting as a trend ribbon alongside a primary Smoothed Moving Average (SMMA).

Traders can use the relationship between the EMAs and the SMMA to gauge trend strength:

  • Bullish Momentum: When the faster EMA 21 crosses above the SMMA, it signals a potential bullish shift or "0 crossover" equivalent in momentum.
  • Bearish Momentum: When the EMA 21 crosses below the SMMA, it indicates a potential bearish breakdown.
  • Trend Support/Resistance: The EMA 50 and 80 act as secondary layers of dynamic support or resistance, helping users visualize the depth of pullbacks within a primary trend.

Details

The script is constructed using two primary moving average methodologies. The EMA components (21, 50, and 80) respond quickly to recent price action, providing a granular view of short-to-medium-term momentum. The core of the indicator is the SMMA, which is calculated based on a 50-period EMA that is further smoothed over a user-defined length.

The SMMA calculation follows a specific logic: it initializes with a Simple Moving Average (SMA) of the 50-period EMA and subsequently applies a smoothing formula: (Previous SMMA * (Length - 1) + Current EMA 50) / Length. This dual-filtering process reduces market noise and provides a more stable baseline for crossover signals compared to standard moving averages.

Settings

  • src (Source): Determines the price data used for all moving average calculations (default is Close).
  • len (SMMA Length): Sets the lookback period used for smoothing the EMA 50 to create the SMMA line.

FAQ

How do I interpret the crossover signals? A crossover occurs when the EMA 21 (light blue) moves through the SMMA (red). An upward cross suggests strengthening bullish momentum, while a downward cross suggests strengthening bearish momentum.

Can I adjust the sensitivity of the trend detection? Yes, by modifying the "Length" setting in the inputs, you can increase the smoothing of the SMMA for a more long-term trend view or decrease it for faster signal generation.
