The Price Action Health Check indicator measures market health by analyzing the separation between dynamic exponential moving averages (EMAs) to provide context-aware trend status.

Usage

The Price Action Health Check is primarily used to identify shifts in market momentum and trend quality before they become apparent through price alone. Users can monitor the "Health Status" displayed in the on-screen table, which classifies the market into categories such as "Great," "Okay," "Neutral," "Not Okay," or "Bad," combined with a directional momentum descriptor (Improving or Worsening).

Key applications include:

  • Trend Validation: Comparing current EMA separation against historical positive and negative averages to determine if a trend is overextended or strengthening.
  • Early Reversal Detection: Watching for health status transitions (e.g., from "Bad" to "Not Okay, but Improving") to spot potential bottoming or topping structures.
  • Timeframe Filtering: Using the tool on Weekly or Daily timeframes to filter out noise and focus on high-probability trend health.
  • Momentum Monitoring: Utilizing the 13-period dashed trendline and visual color changes to gauge if the current price action health is deteriorating relative to recent history.

Details

The indicator functions by calculating a percentage difference between a fast and slow EMA. To maintain relevance across different market cycles, the EMA periods automatically adjust based on the chart's timeframe:

  • Weekly: Uses 2 and 5 periods.
  • Daily: Uses 8 and 21 periods.
  • Intraday: Defaults to 10 and 20 periods.

The "Health Line" is plotted in a separate pane. The script tracks the historical average of positive and negative readings to establish "normal" boundaries for the current symbol. A neutral zone is defined by a threshold (default 0.5%) where price action is considered sideways. The visual output changes color based on whether the difference is increasing (improving) or decreasing (worsening) relative to previous bars and historical averages.

Settings

  • Neutral Threshold: Determines the percentage range (above and below zero) that is considered "Neutral" market health.
  • Positive Average: A historical calculation of positive health readings used to define "Great" health levels.
  • Negative Average: A historical calculation of negative health readings used to define "Bad" health levels.

What does it mean when the table says "Great but worsening"?

This indicates that while the overall trend health is still technically strong (above the historical average), the momentum has started to slow down or pull back compared to the previous bar.
