Dynamic Market Structure (MTF) - Dow Theory
Oct 22, 2025

The Dynamic Market Structure (MTF) - Dow Theory indicator provides a comprehensive solution for analyzing market structure by automating the identification of key structural points based on classic Dow Theory principles.
Usage
The Dynamic Market Structure (MTF) - Dow Theory tool is designed to help traders visualize the flow of the trend through price action analysis. It automatically identifies structural components such as Higher Highs (HH), Higher Lows (HL), Lower Lows (LL), and Lower Highs (LH).
- Trend Identification: Traders can quickly assess market direction using the sequence of HH/HL and LL/LH labels, complemented by trend-based candle coloring.
- Entry Signals: Breaks of Structure (BOS) can be used to signal potential trend continuation entries, while Change of Character (CHoCH) levels highlight potential trend reversals.
- Risk Management: The "Invalidation" (INV) lines provide logical reference points for stop-loss placement. If an INV level is breached, the prior structural move is considered invalidated.
- MTF Confirmation: By using the "Firm" (FHL/FLH) labels, traders can find high-probability swing points that have been confirmed by price action on a lower timeframe.
Details
The indicator is built on the foundational principles of Dow Theory, where uptrends consist of higher peaks/troughs and downtrends consist of lower peaks/troughs.
- Pivot Detection: The core logic uses standard pivot high and low functions. The sensitivity is determined by lookback settings; a higher lookback results in more significant but fewer detected pivots.
- Structure Calculation: A bullish BOS is identified when a new pivot high exceeds the previous one. Conversely, a bearish CHoCH occurs when the established sequence of higher lows is broken by a lower low.
- Multi-Timeframe (MTF) Logic: This feature analyzes a second, lower timeframe to confirm swing points. If a pivot on the main chart coincides with a trend reversal on the lower timeframe, it is labeled "Firm" (FHL/FLH); otherwise, it is labeled "Soft" (SHL/SLH).
- Invalidation Levels: The script identifies the last confirmed pivot before a structure break and projects a dotted line to the breakout bar, marking the critical support/resistance level for that specific move.

- Show Invalidation Levels: Toggles the visibility of the dotted INV lines.
FAQ
How do I interpret "Firm" vs "Soft" labels? A "Firm" label (e.g., FHL) indicates that the pivot point on your current chart is also supported by a trend reversal on a lower timeframe, providing higher confluence. A "Soft" label means the lower timeframe has not yet confirmed the reversal.
What is the difference between BOS and CHoCH? A Break of Structure (BOS) represents the continuation of the current trend. A Change of Character (CHoCH) represents the first sign of a potential trend reversal where the previous structural sequence is broken.
