The Power Indicator indicator provides a comprehensive trading toolkit by combining multiple Exponential Moving Averages (EMAs), VWAP, and volume-based bar coloring into a single overlay. This tool is designed to help traders identify trend direction, mean reversion levels, and significant volume expansion directly on their charts.

Usage

The tool can be used to identify trend momentum and potential reversal points through several layers of data:

  • Trend Analysis: Use the four EMAs (9, 21, 50, and 200 by default) to determine the short-term and long-term trend bias.
  • Volume Exhaustion & Strength: The script automatically colors price bars based on volume intensity. Red bars indicate ultra-high volume, while orange, yellow, and white represent decreasing levels of relative volume strength. Blue bars signify standard volume.
  • Support & Resistance: The VWAP line serves as a dynamic benchmark for intraday price action, often acting as a magnet or a level of support/resistance.
  • Signal Detection: The "Indicator" component generates "Buy" and "Sell" labels based on price momentum relative to a historical window, helping to pinpoint entries during trend shifts.

Details

The Power Indicator streamlines technical analysis by consolidating several core trading concepts:

  • Exponential Moving Averages: These provide a smoother representation of price action, giving more weight to recent data to reduce lag.
  • Volume Normalization: Instead of looking at raw volume numbers, the script compares current volume against a Simple Moving Average (SMA) of volume. This allows the tool to highlight "expressive" volume bars that stand out from the average.
  • Directional Strength Index (DSI): The internal signal logic calculates the count of higher closes versus lower closes over a specified length and resolution, triggering labels when a specific threshold of momentum is met.

Settings

EMAs

  • Fast EMA: Sets the period for the fastest moving average (default 9).
  • Slow EMA: Sets the period for the secondary moving average (default 21).
  • Slower EMA: Sets the period for the intermediate moving average (default 50).
  • Lazy EMA: Sets the period for the long-term trend moving average (default 200).

Volume

  • Volume Average Length: The lookback period for calculating average volume.
  • % Red / Orange / Yellow / White Bar: Thresholds (as a percentage of the average) that determine the color coding of the price bars based on volume strength.

Indicator

  • Indicator Length: The lookback period used for the Buy/Sell signal logic.
  • Indicator Source/Resolution: Defines the data point (e.g., Close) and timeframe used for signal calculation.
  • Allow Repainting?: Toggles whether the security function uses lookahead or real-time data processing.

FAQ

How do I interpret the colored bars?

Bars are colored based on their volume relative to the average. Red represents the highest relative volume (Ultra), followed by orange, yellow, and white in descending order of intensity.

What causes a "Buy" or "Sell" signal to appear?

Signals are generated when the internal momentum calculation (DSI) reaches a maximum or minimum threshold over the user-defined "Indicator Length."
