The Moving Average indicator provides a comprehensive toolkit for technical analysis by overlaying up to four customizable moving averages and two Fractal Adaptive Moving Averages (FRAMA) onto a single chart. This tool allows traders to visualize multiple timeframes and trend strengths simultaneously, facilitating better trend identification and support/resistance analysis.

Usage

The Usage section describes how the script can be used to identify market trends and potential reversal points. Users can toggle specific moving averages on or off to declutter the workspace or focus on specific trend horizons.

  • Trend Identification: By using multiple lengths (e.g., 20, 50, 100, 200), traders can determine the short-term vs. long-term market direction. When shorter averages are above longer ones, it typically signals a bullish trend.
  • Support and Resistance: Moving averages often act as dynamic support or resistance levels. The script includes built-in alerts for price crossovers, notifying users when the price moves above or below a specific average.
  • Adaptive Analysis: The inclusion of FRAMA allows for a moving average that adjusts its sensitivity based on market volatility, following price more closely during trends and smoothing out during consolidations.

Details

The script is constructed to offer significant flexibility in calculation methods. Unlike standard moving average tools, this indicator includes a variety of smoothing algorithms beyond the standard Simple Moving Average (SMA) and Exponential Moving Average (EMA).

  • Diverse MA Types: It supports advanced calculations such as DEMA (Double Exponential), TEMA (Triple Exponential), Hull Moving Average, and Least Squares, each offering different levels of lag reduction and smoothing.
  • FRAMA Implementation: The Fractal Adaptive Moving Average (FRAMA) uses fractal geometry to dynamically adjust its smoothing period. It uses the highest highs and lowest lows over a period to calculate a fractal dimension, ensuring the average remains responsive to significant price movements while remaining stable during noise.
  • Visual Organization: The indicator uses varying transparency levels for the four main MAs to help users distinguish between the different lengths visually.

Settings

The settings are divided into groups for standard moving averages and adaptive averages:

  • Enable all MAs with one click: A master toggle to turn all four primary moving averages on or off.
  • Enable 1st/2nd/3rd/4th MA: Individual toggles for each of the four moving average lines.
  • Choose MA length: Sets the lookback period for the respective moving average.
  • Choose MA type: Selects the calculation method (SMA, EMA, DEMA, TEMA, WMA, VWMA, Hull, Arnaud Legoux, or Least squares).
  • Choose MA price source: Determines which price data (Close, Open, High, Low, etc.) is used for calculations.
  • Arnaud Legoux MA Offset/Sigma: Specific parameters to adjust the smoothness and alignment of the ALMA.
  • Enable 1st/2nd FRAMA: Toggles for the Fractal Adaptive Moving Averages.
  • FRAMA length: Sets the period used for the fractal dimension calculation.
  • FRAMA lower/upper shift limit: Controls the boundaries for the FRAMA's adaptive smoothing factor.
