The Stochastic MACD - Slow and Fast indicator combines the momentum-tracking capabilities of the Stochastic Oscillator with the trend-following properties of the MACD to identify potential turning points and momentum shifts in the market. By applying the Stochastic calculation to the difference between two moving averages, this tool provides a unique perspective on overbought and oversold conditions relative to trend strength.

Usage

The indicator consists of two primary components: a Slow version for broader trend identification and a Fast version for sensitive momentum tracking. Traders can use these components to identify market entry and exit opportunities across various asset classes like Forex, indices, and cryptocurrencies.

  • Trend Reversals: Look for crossovers between the Stochastic MACD lines and their signal lines.
  • Momentum Shifts: The dual histograms (Fast and Slow) provide visual cues on the strength of the current move. A rising histogram indicates increasing momentum, while a falling one suggests waning strength.
  • Directional Bias: The indicator includes a Zero Trend Line. Signals generated below this line are often more effective for Long entries, while signals above the line are prioritized for Short entries.
  • Signal Markers:
    • ↑/↓: Occurs when the Slow Stochastic MACD line crosses its Signal line.
    • ▲/▼: Occurs when the Fast Stochastic MACD line crosses the Slow Stochastic MACD line.

Details

This script implements a variation of the traditional MACD by incorporating a Stochastic Oscillator logic. Instead of simply plotting the difference between two EMAs, it measures the current position of that difference relative to its high/low range over a specified lookback period.

The Slow component typically uses standard MACD settings (12, 26, 9) but applies them through a Stochastic filter. The Fast component uses shorter periods to react more quickly to price changes. Users can choose from multiple moving average types (SMA, EMA, SMMA, WMA, VWMA, HMA) for the internal calculations, allowing for significant customization of the indicator's "smoothness" and latency.

Settings

SLOW - STOCHASTIC MACD

  • Fast/Slow Length: Determines the periods for the two moving averages used in the initial MACD calculation.
  • MA Type/Source: Selects the calculation method (e.g., EMA) and the price source (e.g., Close).
  • Signal Length: The period for the signal line calculation.
  • Look Back: The period used for the Stochastic calculation applied to the MACD values.
  • Color Look Back: Determines the sensitivity of the histogram color changes based on rising/falling values.

FAST - STOCHASTIC MACD

  • This group contains identical settings to the Slow section but is intended for shorter-term, more reactive inputs to generate the "Fast" overlay lines and histogram.

Trend Line

  • Period to calculate the Trend Line: Adjusts the sensitivity of the background trend calculation that colors the 20, 0, and -20 levels.

Signal: Long/Buy or Short/Sell

  • Crossing Slow Lines: Enables/disables the ↑ and ↓ plot shapes on the chart.
  • Crossing Fast/Slow Line: Enables/disables the ▲ and ▼ plot shapes on the chart.

FAQ

How do I interpret the histogram colors? The histogram colors change based on whether the value is above or below zero and whether it is currently rising or falling. Brighter colors typically represent strong momentum in the direction of the trend, while faded colors suggest a potential slowdown.

What is the significance of the 15 and -15 levels? These act as overbought and oversold thresholds for the Stochastic MACD values, helping traders identify extremes where a reversal might be imminent.
