The Breakout Trend Trading Strategy - V1 indicator is a trend-following tool designed to identify and trade price breakouts confirmed by high volume and trend bias. It aims to capture momentum in trending markets, particularly in daily timeframes where volume data is most reliable.

Usage

The indicator identifies potential trade entries based on "breakouts," which are defined by significant price movement and high relative volume within a single day.

  • Trend Bias: The strategy uses a Supertrend calculation to establish the underlying trend direction. While entry targets are independent of bias, the criteria for entering against the trend are more stringent.
  • Trade Direction: Users can filter for Long, Short, or All signals. Note that short conditions often carry higher risk in equity markets.
  • Compounding/Pyramiding: The tool supports adding to existing positions. The allowImmediateCompound setting dictates whether the strategy waits for the stop line to clear the entry price before adding more size.
  • Visualization: Users can choose from various display modes:
    • Targets: Markers for upward and downward breakout targets.
    • Target Channel: Displays targets as a continuous channel.
    • Target with Stops: Shows target levels alongside their respective protective stops.
    • Up/Down Channels: Specialized channels focused on the long or short side respectively.

Details

The strategy calculates breakouts using Average True Range (ATR) and Volume Moving Averages (VMA). A breakout is confirmed when price movement exceeds an ATR threshold and volume exceeds its moving average by a specified percentage.

To improve signal quality, the strategy incorporates a "Yearly High/Low" filter, comparing current price action to the highs and lows of the previous two years. This helps prevent entering long positions near multi-year exhaustion points or shorting during structural uptrends. The strategy also includes a moving average alignment score, assessing the stack of MAs from the 5-period to the 200-period to ensure the trade is supported by broader market structure.

Settings

Strategy & Backtesting

  • Exit on Signal: When enabled, the strategy exits positions based on opposite signals; otherwise, it relies on the trailing stop.
  • Trade Direction: Filters signals to only show Long, Short, or Both.
  • Backtest Years: Determines the historical lookback period for performance metrics.

Breakout & Stops

  • Stop Multiplier: Adjusts the distance of the trailing stop loss based on ATR.
  • Compound Multiplier: Sets the threshold for adding to a winning position.
  • Allow Immediate Compound: If checked, allows pyramiding immediately upon a new breakout.

Display

  • Display Mode: Controls the visual representation (Targets, Channels, or Stops).
  • Show Trailing Stop: Toggles the visibility of the active trailing stop line.
  • Show Target Levels: Toggles the visibility of entry and exit target lines.
  • Show Previous Levels: Displays historical target levels (may increase chart clutter).

FAQ

How do I use the breakout targets for manual trading?

The targets can be used as entry levels if no position is currently open. When a breakout occurs, the Target with Stops mode provides a clear risk-to-reward visualization.

Why does the strategy perform differently on currencies?

This script is optimized for daily timeframes on instruments with centralized volume (like stocks). Currencies often lack reliable volume data, which is a core component of the breakout confirmation logic.
