Moving Average Channel
Jul 16, 2020

The Moving Average Channel indicator provides a comprehensive volatility-based envelope system that uses various moving average types to identify potential price exhaustion and reversion points.
Usage
The Usage section describes how the script can be used to identify trend boundaries and potential market reversals. By surrounding the price with multiple levels of bands, users can visualize different degrees of price deviation from the mean.
- Identifying Reversions: The tool plots "Reversion Points" (triangles) when the price crosses outside a selected band level. This indicates the price has reached an extreme relative to its average volatility.
- Swing Back Analysis: When enabled, the "Swing Back" option highlights instances where price returns within the band structure after a breach, suggesting a normalization of price action.
- Filtering Signals: The "Extra Filter" setting ensures that signals only trigger when a candle closes back within the bands after a cross, which helps filter out strong momentum breakouts that might lead to "false" reversal signals.
- Trade Planning: The script automatically projects potential Stop Loss (SL) and Take Profit (TP) levels based on the Average True Range (ATR) whenever a reversion point is identified, assisting in risk-reward calculations.
Details
The script constructs its channels by first calculating a central moving average (the baseline) and then applying a volatility offset. Unlike standard Bollinger Bands which use standard deviation, this indicator uses the average price range or body size over a specific period as the basis for its band distance.
The bands are expanded using three distinct multipliers, typically following Fibonacci sequences (e.g., 3.77, 6.1, 9.87), though these are fully customizable. The indicator supports ten different moving average types, including advanced versions like TEMA (Triple Exponential Moving Average), LSMA (Least Squares Moving Average), and a proprietary MSMA (Multi-smoothed Moving Average) for varying levels of sensitivity and lag.
Settings
Display
- Level 1/2/3 Bands: Toggles the visibility of the internal, middle, and outer channel boundaries.
- Middle Line: Toggles the visibility of the central baseline moving average.
- Reversion Points: Enables or disables the visual triangle markers for price exhaustion.
- Swing Back Points: Displays points where price crosses back into the channel from the outside.
MA Settings
- MA Period: Sets the lookback length for the central baseline calculation.
- MA Source: Determines the price data used for the moving average (e.g., Close, HL2).
- MA Type: Selects the smoothing algorithm (SMA, EMA, WMA, RMA, HMA, TEMA, DEMA, SMMA, LSMA, MSMA).
- MA Range Source: Chooses whether volatility is calculated using the full candle "Range" or just the candle "Body".
Levels
- Level 1/2/3: Sets the multipliers applied to the volatility range to determine band width.
- Arrow Level Crossing: Determines which specific band level triggers the Reversion Point signals.
- Extra Filter: When active, signals require a candle close to confirm the rejection of a band level.
Risk Management
- Display Stop Loss / Take Profit: Toggles the visibility of ATR-based risk management lines and labels.
- ATR Length: Sets the lookback period for the ATR calculation.
- Stop Loss / Take Profit ATR Multiplicator: Adjusts the distance of the SL and TP levels from the entry price based on current volatility.
FAQ
How do I adjust the sensitivity of the signals? You can change the "MA Type" to a more reactive average like HMA or DEMA, or increase the "MA Period" for smoother, long-term signals. Additionally, choosing a higher "Arrow Level Crossing" (e.g., Level 3) will result in fewer but more extreme reversion signals.
What does the Extra Filter do? The Extra Filter checks if the price closes back inside the band after touching it. This ensures that the indicator only signals a reversal when there is evidence of price rejection rather than just a temporary touch during a strong trend.
