The AlphaTrend indicator is a trend-following tool designed to identify market direction, provide dynamic support and resistance levels, and generate actionable buy and sell signals while minimizing false entries during sideways price action.

Usage

The AlphaTrend tool is used to identify trend reversals and establish trailing stop-loss levels. Interpretation is primarily based on the interaction between the primary AlphaTrend line and its 2-bar offset counterpart.

  • Buy/Long Signals: Occur when the AlphaTrend line crosses above the 2-bar offset line. This is visually represented by a green background fill between the two lines and a "BUY" label on the chart.
  • Sell/Short Signals: Occur when the AlphaTrend line crosses below the 2-bar offset line. This is visually represented by a red background fill between the two lines and a "SELL" label on the chart.
  • Support and Resistance: During an uptrend, the line acts as a trailing support level, plotted at a specific ATR distance from the low. In a downtrend, it acts as a trailing resistance level, plotted at a specific ATR distance from the high. Horizontal segments in the indicator line suggest significant support or resistance zones.
  • Momentum Filtering: The indicator incorporates volume and momentum data to filter signals. By default, it uses the Money Flow Index (MFI). If a symbol lacks volume data, users can toggle a setting to use the Relative Strength Index (RSI) instead.

Details

The AlphaTrend indicator was developed by Kıvanç Özbilgiç as an evolution of the Trend Magic indicator. It aims to improve upon its predecessor by reducing stop-loss hits in range-bound markets and providing more accurate signals during trending phases.

The script integrates multiple technical categories:

  • Momentum/Volume: Uses MFI (or RSI) to determine the bullish or bearish bias.
  • Volatility: Utilizes the Average True Range (ATR) to calculate the distance for trailing stops.
  • Trend: Employs a calculation method similar to Magic Trend, where the indicator line only moves in the direction of the trend and stays flat during counter-trend movements, creating a "step" visual.

Settings

  • Multiplier: The coefficient used to multiply the ATR value, determining how far the indicator line trails from the price.
  • Common Period: The lookback period used for the ATR, MFI, and RSI calculations.
  • Source: The price input used for calculations (default is Close).
  • Show Signals?: Toggles the visibility of the "BUY" and "SELL" labels on the chart.
  • Change calculation (no volume data)?: When enabled, the script switches the momentum filter from the Money Flow Index (MFI) to the Relative Strength Index (RSI). This is necessary for markets without volume data, such as certain Forex pairs or indices.

FAQ

What is the difference between AlphaTrend and Trend Magic? AlphaTrend introduces an offset line to generate crossover signals and incorporates momentum filters (MFI/RSI) to reduce false signals during sideways market conditions, whereas Trend Magic relies more strictly on price and ATR.

Can AlphaTrend be used on all timeframes? Yes, AlphaTrend is a versatile tool that can be applied to any timeframe or asset class, provided the "Common Period" and "Multiplier" are adjusted to suit the specific volatility of the instrument.
