The Exponential VWAP & Deviations indicator provides a volume-weighted exponential moving average anchored to specific time intervals, offering a smoothed alternative to traditional VWAP with integrated volatility bands.

Usage

The tool is designed to identify trend direction and potential mean reversion points across various timeframes. Users can select the anchoring interval (Daily, Weekly, Monthly, or Yearly) to suit their trading style.

  • Trend Identification: When price remains above the central EVWAP line, it indicates a bullish bias for the selected interval, while price below suggests a bearish bias.
  • Mean Reversion: The three sets of deviation bands act as overbought and oversold levels. Traders often look for price exhaustion near the outer bands (Mult 2 or 3) for potential reversals back toward the EVWAP.
  • Support/Resistance: The previous interval's closing values can be displayed to highlight historical key levels that may act as support or resistance in the current session.

Details

Unlike standard VWAP which uses a simple cumulative average, this indicator utilizes a volume-weighted Exponential Moving Average (EMA). The deviation bands are also calculated exponentially, using the EVWAP as the mean. This results in a calculation that places more weight on recent price and volume data within the chosen interval, allowing the indicator to react more dynamically to market shifts compared to its traditional counterpart.

Settings

  • Source: Determines the price data used for the calculation (default is HLC3).
  • Pivot Interval: Sets the anchor for the calculation (Daily, Weekly, Monthly, or Yearly).
  • Deviations Mult 1/2/3: Adjusts the multiplier for the three sets of outer bands.
  • Plot VWAP & Dev Interval Closes: When enabled, the indicator plots the closing levels of the EVWAP and its deviations from the prior interval.

FAQ

How do I use the Exponential VWAP & Deviations?

You can use it to identify the current market trend relative to volume-weighted value and spot potential exhaustion points at the deviation bands.

How does this differ from regular VWAP?

Standard VWAP uses an arithmetic mean of price and volume, whereas this version uses an exponential decay, making it more responsive to recent volume-weighted price action.
