The Pivot Channel indicator automatically identifies and plots dynamic trend channels, Fibonacci retracement levels, and support/resistance zones based on historical pivot points.

Usage

The Usage section describes how the script can be used to identify trend direction and potential reversal zones. By analyzing the most prominent pivot highs and lows, the tool constructs a channel that adapts to market volatility.

  • Trend Identification: Users can use the upper and lower trendlines to determine the current market bias. A price staying within the channel suggests a stable trend, while breaks may indicate exhaustion.
  • Fibonacci Levels: When enabled, the indicator projects Fibonacci levels between the identified high and low trendlines, providing intraday traders with potential scalp targets or areas of interest.
  • Support & Resistance: Pivot points are marked on the chart to highlight historical levels where price action has previously reacted, serving as horizontal reference points.
  • Heatmap: The optional heatmap feature visualizes RSI intensity over various lengths, helping traders gauge momentum relative to the established channel.

Details

The script functions by calculating pivot highs and lows over user-defined lookback periods. It then utilizes a selection algorithm to find the most "optimal" trendlines—either by finding lines that contain the most price action or using a proximity-based method. Unlike standard static pivot points, this indicator extends lines into the future based on the calculated slope, creating a forward-looking channel.

Settings

Pivot points

  • Pivot high length: Sets the number of bars required to the left and right to confirm a pivot high.
  • Max pivot points: Determines how many historical pivots are used for trendline calculations.
  • Draw pivot points: Toggles the visibility of the pivot labels on the chart.
  • Pivot sources: Allows users to select which price data (High/Low/Close) is tested and used for plotting.

Trends

  • Use old method to find channel lines: Switches between the count-based optimization and a proximity-based optimization for trendline placement.
  • High/Low trend line style/width: Customizes the visual appearance of the channel boundaries.
  • Right channel extension length: Determines how many bars into the future the lines are projected.

Heatmap

  • Enable Heatmap: Toggles the momentum-based background coloring.
  • Min/Max RSI length: Sets the range for the multi-length RSI calculation used in the heatmap.
  • Number of horizontal grid segments: Adjusts the resolution of the heatmap display.

Fibs

  • Enable Fibs: Toggles the visibility of Fibonacci levels within the channel.
  • Draw fib lines > 1.618: Extends Fibonacci projections beyond the standard 0-1 range.

FAQ

How do I use the Pivot Channel for breakout trading? You can look for price closes outside of the dashed trendlines. A sustained move outside the channel often indicates a shift in market structure.

What does the heatmap represent? The heatmap visualizes RSI values across multiple timeframes simultaneously. Brighter or more intense colors typically represent overbought or oversold momentum relative to the channel.
