The Low Volatility Range Breakout (LVRB) indicator identifies consolidation phases characterized by suppressed volatility and generates actionable signals when price breaks out of these ranges. It automates the detection of accumulation and distribution zones, providing visual cues for potential significant directional moves following volatility contraction.

Usage

The indicator can be used to identify high-probability breakout opportunities after a period of price compression.

  • Wait for Consolidation: A gray box appears on the chart when a qualified low-volatility range is forming.
  • Long Signal: A green triangle appears below the bar with a "LONG" label when price breaks above the range.
  • Short Signal: A red triangle appears above the bar with a "SHORT" label when price breaks below the range.
  • Optimization: While optimized for BTCUSDT on the 2-hour timeframe by default, the parameters should be adjusted for other assets and timeframes to account for varying market characteristics.

Details

The script operates on three primary logical stages:

  1. Low Volatility Detection: It filters bars based on True Range (TR) relative to a moving average. It can optionally filter based on candle body size to ensure genuine price compression.
  2. Range Formation: Consecutive qualifying bars form a box. The range must meet a minimum bar count and a low-volatility fraction to become "qualified." If the box height exceeds a specific ATR multiple, it is invalidated.
  3. Breakout Logic: Users can choose between "Wick" (requires a pierce and a close outside) or "Close" (requires only a close outside) modes. Additional filters for breakout candle body size and direction are available to reduce false signals.
