Turtle Trade Channels Indicator TUTCI
Jan 29, 2021

The Turtle Trade Channels Indicator (TuTCI) tool provides a comprehensive trend-following framework based on the classic Donchian Channel breakout system to identify high-momentum entry and exit points.
Usage
The Usage section describes how the script can be used to follow trends and manage trades according to the Turtle rules. The indicator visualizes potential trend shifts through color-coded lines and background highlights.
- Long Entry: A long signal is generated when the price touches or exceeds the high of the previous 20 days (the Entry Period). This is visualized by a green label and a change in the background color.
- Short Entry: A short signal is generated when the price touches or falls below the low of the previous 20 days. This is visualized by a red label.
- Trend Direction: The solid red line acts as the primary trend indicator. Price action consistently above this line suggests an uptrend, while price action below it suggests a downtrend.
- Exit Strategy: The dotted blue line represents the exit threshold. A long trade is closed when the price reaches a 10-day low (the Exit Period), and a short trade is closed when the price reaches a 10-day high.
Details
The script is an implementation of the breakout strategy developed by Richard Donchian and popularized by the Turtle Traders. The logic relies on price breaking out of a specific range (n-period high or low) to confirm momentum.
The original system utilizes two specific variations:
- System 1 (S1): A short-term system using a 20-day entry and a 10-day exit.
- System 2 (S2): A long-term "failsafe" system using a 55-day entry and a 20-day exit.
By plotting these channels, the indicator helps traders avoid "buying low and selling high," instead focusing on buying high and selling higher (or selling low and buying lower) to capture the meat of a trending move. The script calculates the highest highs and lowest lows over the user-defined periods to dynamically shift the entry and exit lines.
Settings
- Entry Length: Sets the lookback period for the breakout entry (default is 20).
- Exit Length: Sets the lookback period for the exit signal (default is 10).
- Show Entry/Exit Signals: Toggles the visibility of "Long Entry," "Short Entry," "Exit Long," and "Exit Short" labels on the chart.
- Highlighter On/Off: Toggles the background color shading that indicates whether the system is currently in a Long, Short, or Flat state.
FAQ
How do I identify a trend reversal using this indicator? A trend reversal is typically indicated when the price crosses the solid red trend line and triggers a breakout label in the opposite direction of the prevailing trend.
Can I use this for the S2 Turtle system? Yes, you can apply the indicator a second time and adjust the "Entry Length" to 55 and the "Exit Length" to 20 to represent the failsafe system.
