MACD Histogram
Aug 2, 2019

The MACD Histogram indicator provides a versatile momentum tracking tool that enhances the traditional MACD by offering multiple moving average types and a unique price simulation feature. It is designed to help traders identify trend shifts and momentum exhaustion through a customizable histogram and signal lines.
Usage
The Usage section highlights how to interpret the various visual components of the tool. The indicator plots a colored histogram where different shades represent growing or falling momentum relative to the zero line.
- Trend Identification: Use the MACD and Signal line crossovers to identify potential entry and exit points. Bullish crossovers (MACD crossing above Signal) are highlighted with green background tints and triangle shapes, while bearish crossovers are marked in red.
- Momentum Analysis: The histogram's slope and color intensity provide insights into whether a trend is strengthening or weakening.
- Price Simulation: A unique feature allows users to "test" how the MACD would react if the price were at a specific level or a certain percentage away from the current price. This is particularly useful for forecasting potential crossovers or trend changes before they occur.
Details
This script expands on the standard Moving Average Convergence Divergence formula by allowing users to select from a wide array of specialized moving average calculations, including Zero-Lag variants (ZLEMA, ZLTDEMA) and Low-Lag filters (LLEMA). These options can significantly reduce the inherent lag found in standard exponential moving averages, providing more responsive signals in volatile markets like cryptocurrency.
The test price logic operates on the last bar, replacing the live source with a user-defined absolute price or a percentage offset. This allows for "what-if" scenario modeling directly on the chart.
Settings
- Source: The price data used for calculation (e.g., Close, HLC3).
- MA Type: Select from 18 different moving average types, including EMA, DEMA, TEMA, TDEMA, HMA, and several Zero-Lag versions.
- MA Length: The lookback period for the fast moving average.
- Slow MA Length: The lookback period for the slow moving average.
- Signal Length: The smoothing period for the MACD Signal line.
- Use test price instead of current close price?: Enables simulation mode using absolute price or a percentage offset.
- % from Open or Close: The percentage offset used when simulation mode is active.
- Absolute Price: The specific price level used for simulation when that mode is selected.
FAQ
- How do I interpret the colored histogram? Darker colors indicate increasing momentum (growing away from zero), while lighter shades indicate receding momentum (falling toward zero).
- What is the "Test Price" feature? It allows you to visualize where the MACD components would be if the price reached a specific target, helping you anticipate signals.
- How can I access MACD Histogram? You can get access on the LuxAlgo Library for charting platforms like TradingView, MetaTrader (MT4/MT5), and NinjaTrader for free.
