The Dynamic Support And Resistance indicator is a technical analysis tool designed to identify evolving price floors and ceilings by adapting to market volatility. It aims to provide traders with actionable support, resistance, and trend-following levels that adjust dynamically based on recent price action and the Average True Range (ATR).

Usage

The indicator plots three primary lines on the chart: a Support level (green), a Resistance level (red), and a Middle line. The Middle line is color-coded to reflect the current trend bias based on the closing price relative to the median of the dynamic range.

  • Trend Identification: When the Middle line turns green, it indicates a bullish bias as the price is trading above the median level. Conversely, when the line turns red, it indicates a bearish bias.
  • Support & Resistance: The outer bands act as dynamic targets or areas where price reversals may occur. The upper band (Resistance) is derived from the lowest lows, while the lower band (Support) is derived from the highest highs, adjusted by volatility.
  • Entry Signals: Traders often look for the Middle line's color change as a signal for potential trend reversals. A crossover above the Middle line triggers a "Buy" alert, while a crossunder triggers a "Sell" alert.

Details

The Dynamic Support And Resistance concept was originally introduced by Mike Siroky in "Stocks and Commodities" magazine. The construction relies on a combination of extreme price points (Highest High and Lowest Low) and volatility-adjusted offsets.

The algorithm uses the square root of the user-defined length multiplied by the ATR to determine the distance of the bands. This mathematical approach ensures that the levels expand during periods of high volatility and contract during consolidation, providing a more "dynamic" response compared to static horizontal levels. The inclusion of a multi-timeframe (MTF) resolution setting allows users to anchor these levels to higher timeframes for broader context.

Settings

  • Length: Sets the lookback period used to calculate the Highest High, Lowest Low, and ATR (Default: 25).
  • Resolution: Allows the user to calculate the indicator on a different timeframe than the current chart.
  • Allow Repainting?: Determines whether the indicator uses security function data that may repaint on the current bar.
  • Allow Bar Color Change?: When enabled, the chart bars will be colored according to the trend signal (Green for bullish, Red for bearish).

FAQ

How do I use the Dynamic Support And Resistance indicator?

You can use it to identify current trend direction via the Middle line color and set profit targets or stop-loss levels using the outer Dynamic Support and Resistance bands.

What does the Middle line represent?

The Middle line is the average of the Dynamic Support and Dynamic Resistance levels. It acts as a pivot point for determining the short-to-medium-term trend bias.
