The Opening Range indicator identifies the initial price range established during the start of a trading session, serving as a critical reference point for intraday trend and volatility analysis. This tool helps traders visualize session high and low boundaries, as well as calculated extensions, to anticipate breakouts or mean-reversion movements.

Usage

The Opening Range is often used to set the tone for the trading day. Price behavior relative to these levels can provide several strategic insights:

  • Breakout Identification: A sustained move outside the opening range high or low often signals the beginning of a trending day.
  • Retest Opportunities: After price leaves the range, it frequently returns to retest the boundary. These retests can offer high-probability entry points to join the prevailing trend.
  • Mean Reversion: If price breaks out but fails to hold and closes back inside the range, there is a high probability of it reaching the 50% midpoint or even the opposite side of the range.
  • Targeting: The indicator plots extensions (the width of the range added to the high or low). These levels serve as primary targets for breakout trades.

Details

The script focuses on the first portion of the trading day (typically the first 30 minutes) to establish a "Value Area" or range. Research into market auction theory suggests that the opening range represents the initial balance where institutional and retail participants establish early fair value.

In this implementation, the tool automatically calculates:

  • OR High/Low: The absolute high and low during the specified "Open Range" session.
  • Midpoint: A dashed line representing the 50% mark of the range, often acting as a magnet for choppy price action.
  • Extensions: Levels projected outside the range based on the range's width, providing dynamic support and resistance levels.
