MTI Stochastic RSI with Color Bars and Zones
Aug 27, 2015

The MTI Stochastic RSI with Color Bars and Zones indicator provides a specialized momentum oscillator that applies the Stochastic formula to RSI values, helping traders identify overextended market conditions through visual bar coloring and shaded zones.
Usage
The Usage section describes how the script can be used to identify potential reversal points or trend strength. When the smoothed %D line enters the upper "Sell Zone" (typically above 80), the chart bars are painted red, signaling an overbought state. Conversely, when the %D line enters the lower "Buy Zone" (typically below 20), the bars are painted green, signaling an oversold state.
Traders can use these visual cues to:
- Identify potential exhaustion points in a trend.
- Filter trades by only looking for longs when the price is in an oversold zone or shorts when in an overbought zone.
- Monitor for crossovers out of the extreme zones as potential entry or exit signals.
Details
This tool calculates the Relative Strength Index (RSI) of a chosen source and then applies the Stochastic oscillator formula to that RSI data. The result is a more sensitive oscillator than standard RSI, which can reach extreme levels more frequently. The script outputs a smoothed %D line, which is a Simple Moving Average (SMA) of the calculated Stochastic %K value. This smoothing helps filter out market noise and provides a clearer picture of momentum direction.
Settings
- RSI Source: Determines the price data (e.g., Close, Open, High, Low) used for the initial RSI calculation.
- RSI Length: Sets the lookback period for the RSI calculation (default is 14).
- %K: The period used for the Stochastic calculation on the RSI values.
- %D: The smoothing period (SMA) applied to the Stochastic RSI value.
- Overbought: Defines the upper threshold for the "Sell Zone" (default is 80).
- Oversold: Defines the lower threshold for the "Buy Zone" (default is 20).
FAQ
How do I interpret the colored bars?
Green bars appear when the Stochastic RSI %D line is below the oversold level, while red bars appear when it is above the overbought level. Standard colored bars (or no color) appear when the oscillator is in the neutral zone.
Can I change the sensitivity of the signals?
Yes, you can adjust the RSI Length or the %K and %D smoothing inputs. Increasing these values will result in a slower, smoother oscillator with fewer signals, while decreasing them will make the indicator more reactive.
