The Dynamic Score Supertrend indicator is a trend-following tool that enhances the classic Supertrend methodology with a dynamic scoring system to provide more adaptive and precise market direction signals.

Usage

The Usage section focuses on interpreting the trend signals generated by the combination of ATR-based bands and price momentum scoring.

  • Trend Identification: An uptrend is signaled when the dynamic trend score exceeds the user-defined uptrend threshold, marked by green labels and bar coloring. Conversely, a downtrend is signaled when the score falls below the downtrend threshold, highlighted by red labels.
  • Volatility Filtering: By adjusting the ATR Multiplier and Length, users can filter out market noise. A higher multiplier widens the bands, reducing sensitivity and helping traders stay in long-term trends during temporary pullbacks.
  • Momentum Validation: The Dynamic Score acts as a secondary confirmation. If price is above the upper band but the score hasn't reached the threshold, the trend may lack sufficient momentum to be considered a high-probability entry.
  • Visual Cues: The tool includes bar and background coloring to provide immediate visual feedback on the current market state, making it easier to monitor multiple assets simultaneously.

Details

The indicator's logic is built upon two primary components: traditional Supertrend bands and a custom dynamic scoring array.

The Supertrend bands are calculated using a Simple Moving Average (SMA) of the price shifted by a multiple of the Average True Range (ATR). While standard Supertrends often use a median price, this implementation utilizes a smoothed average as the baseline.

The innovative "Dynamic Trend Score" is derived by evaluating the current closing price against historical band values over a specified lookback window. For every candle in the window where the current price is above the historical upper band, the score increases; if below the lower band, it decreases. This aggregate score provides a probabilistic measure of trend strength rather than a simple binary crossover, allowing for more nuanced trend detection in both trending and choppy markets.

Settings

ATR Settings

  • ATR Length: Determines the lookback period for the Average True Range and the SMA baseline.
  • ATR Multiplier: Sets the distance between the baseline and the volatility bands.

Dynamic Score Settings

  • Window Length: The lookback period used to calculate the trend score. Longer windows result in a more stable, slower-moving trend indicator.
  • Uptrend Threshold: The specific score required to trigger a bullish trend signal.
  • Downtrend Threshold: The specific score required to trigger a bearish trend signal.

Bar Coloring

  • Uptrend/Downtrend Color: Customizes the visual colors used for trend signals.
  • Color Bars?: Toggles price bar coloring based on the active trend.
  • Background Coloring?: Toggles background highlight fills for the active trend.

FAQ

How do I adjust the indicator for scalping vs. swing trading? For scalping, decrease the ATR Multiplier and Window Length for faster reaction. For swing trading, increase these values to capture broader market moves and ignore minor fluctuations.

What does the 'L' and 'S' on the chart represent? These labels represent "Long" and "Short" signals which occur when the Dynamic Score crosses the defined trend thresholds.
