Moving Average Simple Tool
Nov 7, 2024

The Moving Average Simple Tool indicator provides a versatile trend-following framework that combines multiple moving average types with dynamic overbought and oversold deviation levels to identify potential price reversals and momentum shifts.
Usage
The Usage section describes how the script can be used to identify trend direction and exhaustion points. Traders can utilize the tool to visualize the distance between price and its mean, using the deviation columns to spot extreme market conditions.
- Trend Identification: The central moving average line changes color based on price deviation. When the deviation is neutral, the line reflects a gradient; when the price pushes into extreme zones, the line highlights potential exhaustion.
- Mean Reversion: By monitoring the "Deviation" column plot against the Overbought (OB) and Oversold (OS) levels, users can anticipate potential returns to the moving average.
- Customizable Smoothing: Users can switch between six different calculation modes to match their strategy, ranging from the reactive EMA to the volume-sensitive VWMA or the range-based Middle Line.
Details
The script calculates a central baseline (Moving Average) and measures the raw difference (Deviation) between the price source and that baseline. To determine extreme levels, the tool uses linear percentile interpolation on historical deviation data.
The "Sensitivity" setting dictates the percentile threshold; a lower sensitivity value results in narrower OB/OS zones, making the indicator more responsive to smaller price swings. Conversely, higher values widen the zones to capture only significant historical outliers.
Settings
- Source: Determines the price data used for calculations (e.g., Close, Open, High, Low).
- Length: Sets the period for the moving average calculation and the lookback window for the percentile-based OB/OS levels.
- Average: Selects the mathematical method for the baseline (SMA, EMA, WMA, VWMA, RMA, or Middle Line).
- Sensitivity: Adjusts the threshold for Overbought and Oversold levels (range 1–40). Lower values increase sensitivity to price deviations.
- OS Color: Sets the visual color for oversold conditions.
- OB Color: Sets the visual color for overbought conditions.
FAQ
How do I interpret the color changes on the moving average? The moving average line changes color when the price deviation exceeds the calculated Overbought or Oversold thresholds, signaling that the current price move may be overextended.
What is the "Middle Line" average type? Unlike traditional moving averages, the Middle Line calculates the mathematical average of the highest and lowest prices over the specified length, providing a mid-range baseline.
